About the role

Are you early in your engineering career and looking to apply your technical knowledge to projects that protect public health and the environment in rural communities?

We’re seeking a Junior Engineer (Engineer-in-Training) to join our Onsite Wastewater Group within Burnside’s Environmental sector. This role is based in our Mississauga office, with flexibility to work from other Burnside offices depending on candidate fit. You’ll support the planning, analysis, and design of onsite wastewater systems while developing your technical and professional skills under the guidance of experienced engineers.

This position offers exposure to the full project lifecycle from field investigation and design through to regulatory approvals and provides a strong foundation for progression toward professional licensure.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you’ll contribute to onsite wastewater and rural servicing projects while building core engineering competencies. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the engineering design and analysis of septic and small to medium-scale onsite wastewater systems
  • Translating engineering concepts and field data into drawings and layouts using AutoCAD and Civil 3D
  • Preparing and contributing to technical reports, calculations, and supporting documentation for permitting and regulatory approvals
  • Assisting with field work, including test pits, site evaluations, and construction reviews, and applying engineering judgment in rural servicing environments
  • Working closely with senior engineers and technologists to advance projects from concept through approval
  • Coordinating with internal teams, clients, and regulatory agencies to support timely project delivery
  • Developing an understanding of project schedules, budgets, and quality standards within a consulting environment
  • Continuously building technical knowledge and professional judgment through mentorship and hands-on project experience

What You’ll Bring

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline
  • Eligibility for or current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with PEO
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D
  • Interest in onsite sewage systems and rural wastewater servicing
  • Ability to interpret field data and apply engineering fundamentals to design solutions
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Building Code is considered an asset
