About the Position

Position Title Health, Safety and Site Specialist

Job Type Full Time, 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday)

Work Location Onsite

Reports to Chief Program Officer

SUMMARY OF ROLE

Reporting to the Chief Programs Officer, TIES Health, Safety, and Site Specialist (HSSS) is responsible for enhancing the organization’s occupational health and safety standards, supporting emergency preparedness, mitigating operational risks, and ensuring compliance with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) legislation and WHMIS requirements. The position also oversees all TIES sites, ensuring they operate as safe, compliant, accessible, and responsive environments for staff, volunteers, clients, and visitors, among other duties.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Health & Safety Coordination and Compliance

  • Support implementation of health and safety policies and ensure compliance with Alberta OHS and WHMIS requirements
  • Ensure First Aid Kits, AEDs, and emergency supplies are accessible, inspected, and stocked
  • Maintain accurate and accessible Safety Data Sheets (SDS) across all locations
  • Support communication of safety procedures, incident protocols, and Health & Safety Committee updates
  • Maintain safety records, inspection logs, and compliance documentation
  • Conduct safety inspections, report hazards, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and codes

Emergency Preparedness and Risk Management

  • Conduct fire drills and evacuation procedures as required by Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
  • Support inclusive evacuation plans for individuals with reduced mobility
  • Ensure emergency equipment, muster points, and safe spaces are identified and maintained
  • Identify facility risks and recommend mitigation measures
  • Support improvements to safety practices, emergency readiness, access control, and communication systems

Facilities Usage, Reporting and Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor facilities to ensure safe, accessible, and efficient operations
  • Support space coordination and event setup to maintain welcoming environments
  • Identify operational issues and recommend facility improvements
  • Provide leadership with updates on facility priorities and risks
  • Represent TIES at community events and engagement activities as needed

Site Maintenance, Operations and Systems

  • Coordinate routine and urgent maintenance across all locations through regular inspections

  • Respond promptly to facilities requests to minimize operational disruptions

  • Manage the Facilities Tracker by logging, assigning, prioritizing, and tracking requests

  • Conduct regular inspections to identify recurring and preventative maintenance needs

  • Operate and monitor HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems

  • Coordinate servicing, inspections, and repairs of building systems as required

  • Ensure facilities remain clean, safe, and fully functional through proactive maintenance

  • Supervise cleaning services and monitor high-use areas to maintain hygiene standards

  • Adjust system controls for optimal temperature, ventilation, and energy efficiency

  • Perform filter replacements, equipment lubrication, and minor repairs

  • Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and maintenance supplies

  • Monitor CCTV, access control systems, fobs, access cards, and keys

  • Ensure seasonal maintenance, including snow removal and landscaping, meets safety standards

  • Performed snow removal during the daytime if needed and lawn mowing to maintain safe and clean outdoor areas year-round.

  • Maintained and monitored sprinkler/irrigation systems, including troubleshooting and minor repairs.

Contractor, Vendor and Supply Coordination

  • Coordinate and schedule contractors and vendors based on operational needs

  • Monitor contractor work through the Facilities Tracker to ensure timely, quality completion

  • Act as the main contact for contractors regarding scope, timelines, and expectations

  • Ensure contractors meet WCB and insurance requirements before starting work

  • Manage inventory and procurement of maintenance and facilities supplies

  • Maintain records of inspections, repairs, maintenance, and vendor performance

  • Obtain and review repair quotes and recommend options to the supervisor

REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Power Engineering diploma or degree in OHS, Building Operations, Environmental Health, or related field

  • Knowledge of Alberta OHS, WHMIS, workplace safety standards, and building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing)

  • Technical training in HVAC, electrical, or plumbing systems

  • OHS Certificate, National Construction Safety Officer(NCSO), First Aid/CPR, or emergency management training

  • 2–5 years’ experience in health and safety and site operations, maintenance, or building operations

  • Experience with CCTV, access control, and building security systems

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and coordination skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and digital tracking systems
