About Us

The Isaac Waldman Jewish Public Library (IWJPL) located within the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver is looking for an on-call/casual Librarian/Library Technician. They will take shifts as needed to cover the day to day operations of the library. They will be responsible for responding to reference requests and engaging with library patrons, running existing library programming and managing a team of committed volunteers in the absence of regular library staff.

About the position

The Librarian/Library Technician on call will be available as needed to manage the library from open to close. The library’s current hours are Monday - Thursday from 10:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. and Sunday from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

Reporting to the Head Librarian, the right candidate will have excellent communication and problem-solving skills along with experience in Library and/or Information Studies. The successful candidate will have competencies working with a variety of library user groups, especially small children and older adults, and will commit to fostering a welcoming, inclusive and comfortable space in which members of the Jewish and non-Jewish community can access resources to serve their needs.

To make the most out of this opportunity, the on-call librarian/librarian technician is encouraged to take on library projects around collection development, programming and fundraising based on their experience and interests. This position may be ideal for retired professionals, or post-secondary students currently enrolled in library-related programs and looking for management experience.

Highlighted areas of responsibility

  • Responding to reference requests and engaging with patrons.
  • Running library programming, including but not limited to storytimes for children under five and workshops for older adults.
  • Managing special projects under the direction of the Head Librarian and the Library Technician.

Qualifications

  • A University Degree or working toward a degree in Library and Information Services, a Library Technician Diploma or working toward a diploma, or a combination of relevant experience.
  • Consistent availability during the library’s operating hours.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced computer and technical skills.
  • Knowledge of Jewish customs and traditions is an asset.

The successful candidate must provide two professional references, and clear a vulnerable sector criminal record check.
