About the role

The Office of Research Services in VP Research is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Manager for approximately 12 months.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Research Services and is responsible for leading a team to develop and support University of Calgary research impact activities.

The Knowledge to Impact unit is centred around the notion of research impact i.e., making a difference in the communities we serve. Tied to the foundational commitments of University of Calgary's Ahead of Tomorrow vision, the Knowledge to Impact team supports collaborative efforts to maximize and recognize positive impacts of research for the benefit of our local, national and international communities. The unit supports several aspects of the pathway to research impact, from community-engaged research partnership development, knowledge mobilization planning, open science practices, through to best practices for the assessment of the quality and impact of research. Team members are specialists in various areas who collaborate closely to deliver on the Knowledge to Impact team's overall objectives.

The Manager, Knowledge to Impact will oversee a team that is responsible for developing services to better support and further enhance these efforts at the University of Calgary in pursuit of our Strategic Research Plan. This team advances research impact practice and policy through campus and community consultation, coaching and the curation and development of supporting resources and tools for use by researchers in community-engaged research, knowledge mobilization, open science, and planning for, managing, assessing and reporting on research impact.

The Manager, Knowledge to Impact will work within the Office of the Vice-President (Research), while also working closely with key teams within the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and Vice-President (Advancement) portfolios to coordinate services and build communities of practice for areas such as partnership, knowledge mobilization, research assessment, open science, and research impact. The incumbent is responsible for enhancing strategic collaboration with a network of offices and individuals responsible for all Knowledge to Impact areas of practice, in close partnership across the campus community with leadership teams, directors, managers, staff and community partners. The Manager will also help align strategic directions for enhancing and strengthening Knowledge to Impact activities across the institution.

The Manager, Knowledge to Impact functions in a complex, multifaceted environment where relationship building, collaboration and consensus building are required.

The Knowledge to Impact unit is responsible for implementing initiatives that are under the strategic guidance of one or more Associate Vice-Presidents (Research). As such, the Manager regularly consults with the AVPRs about team direction and goals.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Leadership

  • Directly manages the team, making it cohesive and impactful.
  • Ensures that the team maintains and deepens a mutually supportive, high performance culture.
  • Recruits staff and develops an effective team for all areas of Knowledge to Impact activities.
  • Performance management of reporting staff.
  • Supports the professional development of staff in building skills for knowledge mobilization, partnership, research assessment, research impact assessment and open science by seeking out internal and external opportunities for learning and networking.
  • In conjunction with senior leadership in the Office of the Vice-President (Research), the Director, Institutional Programs and relevant advisory groups, develops departmental plans, sets the direction for the team, and plans future activity.
  • Consulted as an expert and thought leader on campus and by external partners to help define university priorities, establish relationships with strategic partners and stakeholders, and advance the practice of knowledge mobilization, partnership, responsible research assessment, research impact assessment and open science

Informing Strategic Institutional Directions, Reporting and Evaluation

  • Guides team members in undertaking benchmarking exercises to measure Knowledge to Impact activity on campus, and developing evaluation frameworks for tracking growth in these areas.
  • Collects, maintains and supports analysis using appropriate performance metrics to monitor the activities and impact of the University of Calgary Knowledge to Impact team to inform unit resource planning and decision-making.
  • Completes all data reporting requirements on Knowledge to Impact activity for the University by gathering information from web metrics and internal sources.
  • Analyses and provides statistical and research impact information and briefing notes relating to community partnerships, knowledge mobilization support, DORA, research impact assessment and open science for the Director, Institutional Programs and senior leadership in the Office of the Vice-President (Research) or other units.

Engagement: Building Knowledge to Impact Profile and Reputation

  • Establishes and maintains positive, trust-based, and effective relationships with constituents both internally and in other organizations (e.g. other universities, national networks, international organizations, funding agencies, etc.) to share policies and best practices in order to make informed judgements about the application of these policies and practices on campus.
  • Identifies and builds relationships with other positions and service units on campus to coordinate activities and develop a community of practice.
  • Undertakes effective outreach to community partners and other parties to promote University of Calgary expertise and build partnerships.
  • Assesses incoming project opportunities for impact and partnership potential.
  • Ensures research community is kept informed of emerging opportunities in knowledge engagement and communicates activity in this sphere.

Communication and Capacity-building

  • Develops and maintains standards, processes and resources that will improve the quality of Knowledge to Impact areas of activity across the University. Resources may include, for example, guides and templates for community partnerships, knowledge mobilization, open science, and evaluation frameworks for impact.
  • Works with staff in the Knowledge to Impact team to plan appropriate outreach and training offerings.
  • Works with team and VPRO staff to develop and implement internal and external communication plans to raise awareness and proactively drive uptake of Knowledge to Impact initiatives and practices at the University of Calgary.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate degree with five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in a research administration or communications role, preferably in an academic environment (or a combination of related experience and training).

  • Subject matter expertise in community-engaged research, knowledge mobilization, open science and research impact assessment (encompassing knowledge translation, community-engaged scholarship, and other similar areas).

  • A strong understanding of how to measure and effectively communicate research impact to various audiences, including knowledge of indices and databases for impact metrics and national and international trends in research impact assessment.
    ¿ Capacity to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with researchers, community partners, colleagues, and other parties.

  • Sound understanding of the University's mission, Academic Plan, and Research and Innovation Plan.

  • Sound understanding of university governance and the discretion required in working with senior leadership from various areas of responsibility.

  • Experience managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment.

  • Superior interpersonal skills, flexibility, tact and perseverance.

  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

  • Capacity to adjust the work schedule to meet multiple demands and pressures, and a demonstrated ability to provide a consistently high level of service.

  • Good working knowledge of standard office software, University business systems, including Microsoft Office, PeopleSoft and SharePoint, is essential.
