The Portland Canal Transportation Limited Partnership's Stewart mining division specializes in serving key customers by hauling copper ore from various mine sites to the Port of Stewart, where it is loaded onto vessels for export overseas. Our division is comprised of approximately 45 professional truck drivers, with equipment maintained by a dedicated onsite shop. As a Shop Operations Supervisor, you will be supported by a Division Manager, Operations Supervisors, and work with the Shop Foreman, Administrator, and the many Portland Canal Transportation LP employees who provide essential support services throughout the company.

Portland Canal Transportation Limited Partnership is a groundbreaking joint venture proudly operated by the Nisga’a Nation, Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC), and Arrow Transportation Systems Inc. This partnership has established the Port of Stewart as British Columbia’s first majority Indigenous-owned port—a significant milestone in advancing Indigenous economic leadership and ensuring full supply chain participation, from mining through to global export. Responsibilities:

The Shop Operations Supervisor oversees safe, reliable, and cost‑effective operations of the Portland Canal’s truck maintenance shop, yard, and port facilities. This role leads and manages people, processes, and assets to maximize equipment availability, port readiness, and up-time—while maintaining regulatory compliance and a strong safety culture. The Shop Operations Supervisor partners closely with Maintenance, Operations, and HSE to deliver up-time, schedule adherence, and customer service excellence.

Major Responsibilities

  • Manage daily truck shop operations in Stewart BC, including preventive maintenance and repair quality.
  • Maintain port, shop, and yard readiness, ensuring cargo‑handling equipment and port facilities assets are available and compliant.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs and reliability-based practices to maximize up-time and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Promote and lead safety culture initiatives, including hazard assessments, audits, and adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial transportation regulations and environmental requirements for port operations.
  • Implement reliability‑based maintenance practices and root-cause analysis to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Manage accurate asset records, optimize parts inventory, and utilize CMMS/TMT systems for work orders and compliance reporting.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development for foreman, lead hands, technicians, and port staff.
  • Develop and manage operating and capital budgets for the mechanic shop.
  • Liaise with vendors, OEMs, sub-contractors, and dealerships to support maintenance and operational needs.

Working Conditions

Mixed indoor/outdoor industrial environments: Stewart BC shop, yard, and port; exposure to weather and noise. Potential on‑call coverage as required by operations. Ability to walk, stand, climb, and safely navigate active industrial areas; use of PPE.

You Possess:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in maintenance/facilities operations, in a supervisory capacity.
  • Preference will be given to those with Post Secondary Education and/or experience working in a related field.
  • Experience supervising specialized crews in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial vehicle maintenance and port facility upkeep.
  • Working knowledge of NSC, WHMIS, and provincial transportation/occupational safety regulations.
  • Proficiency with CMMS/fleet systems and Microsoft Office 365.
