Job Summary
The Head MR Technologist will be responsible for managing the MRI Suite of the BCCH MRI Research Facility. The position includes management of the MRI Programme and a quality control program, managing, training and orienting new staff, coordinating work activities, managing imaging data as well as participating in the approval and development of protocols for MR research studies. The primary place of work is the BCCH Research MRI Facility which is a standard MR imaging facility where care and attention to the risk of high field strength magnetic fields is required.
Organizational Status
The successful candidate as Head MR Technologist BCCH MRI Research Facility will report to the Director of the BCCH MRI Research Facility who in turn reports to Head of the UBC Department of Paediatrics and the Executive Director of the BCCH Research Institute.
Work Performed
a. Develop Protocols for MR Research Studies
i) Set up customized protocols for research and clinical use
ii) Optimize imaging parameters
iii) Document and strictly control parameters to maintain high scientific standards
b. Participate in the Protocol Review Committee meetings
i) The committee is responsible for approving proposed MR research and the Head Tech is an important part of the committee.
ii) Determine if the study is feasible on the current system and what time is likely to be required per study
iii) Indicate what protocol development is required before commencing the study
c. Management of the MRI Suite Safety
i) Responsible for development and implementation of and adherence to safety protocols for the 3T magnet.
ii) Ensure that all maintenance, cleaning staff, students and all others in the area are properly informed on the specificity of the MRI and proper maintenance of such
iii) Chair MRI Safety Committee as MRI Safety Officer
iv) Manages MRI Areas (MRI control Room, MRI Magnet Room, Electrical Room, Anaesthesia Bay)
v) Provides safety Training for BCCHR Facilities Staff, BCCHR Staff, UBC Staff and others
vi) On call for emergency situations or issues regarding the MRI Facility, MRI Magnet, MRI Chiller, or power issues or failures
d. Accountable for a Quality Control Program
i) includes weekly analyses such as gradient stability and spectroscopy QC
ii) A gradient stability test will be performed daily in addition to shorter weekly tests
iii) Helium level checks and cryogen checks as well as periodic image quality checks.
iv) Monitor equipment performance and troubleshot technical problems
v) Organizes Maintenance schedule for all equipment in the MRI Areas with GE Healthcare, PHSA Biomedical Engineering, BCCHR Facilities, HVAC
e. Imaging Data Management
i) Oversee record keeping and data management of acquired imaging data
ii) Ensure all researchers have access to their study data while maintaining confidentiality
f. Coordinate Work Activities
i) Recruits, manages and trains MR Technologists
ii) Supervision and training of all additional MR technologists
iii) Ensure staff adheres to strict research protocols
iv) Coordinate and manage the scheduling of research subjects, staff and MR time
v) Presents regular research updates and makes recommendations to the Imaging Supervisory Group
g. Technical Orientation of new Staff and Researchers
i) Orient trainees/techs to the RF coils, scanner functions etc.
ii) Ensure all new staff adhere the safety protocols
h. Administrative duties
i) Keep track of inventory of consumables and ordering
ii) Review and Approval of casual hours in UBC System
iii) Scheduling of casual for work days
iv) In charge of updating and filling out billings for MRI usage times and billing notes
v) Resolves issues and discrepancies with billings
vi) Membership and participation in the Operations Committee
vii)Create policies for BCCH MRI Research Facility
viii) Oversee DAP Processes - Reviewing and updating Documents, Policies and procedures - creating new policies
These duties may be subject to change and the MRI Tech may be required to perform any additional duties as necessary to support the operation of the BCCH MRI Research Facility
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Exercises professional judgment and initiative in the overall management of MRI Suite of the BCCH MRI Research Facility for all aspects of daily operations, including safety.
Supervision Received
The successful candidate as Head MR Technologist BCCH MRI Research Facility will report to the Director of the BCCH MRI Research Facility who in turn reports to the Head of the UBC Department of Paediatrics and the Executive Director of the BCCH Research Institute. The level of supervision is primarily consultative. Policy decisions will be made by the Director of the BCCH MRI Research Facility in consultation with the members of the Protocol Review Committee, Operations Committee and Safety Committee.

- Functional direction of all staff and volunteers for issues of safety
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified clinical MR Technologist with CMART Certification. At least 3 years experience working with children in a pediatric hospital setting. At least 3 years experience working in MR in a pediatric hospital setting. At least 3 years experience working in Medical Imaging Discipline.
