Responsibilities

The Business Controller is accountable to the Finance Operations Director for the areas of capital management, production accounting, tax, inventory management, credit management, natural gas reporting, and operational excellence. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of operational information for Senior Management.

Tax compliance:

  • Ensure compliance in all tax functions including GST, PST, non-resident withholdings and corporate taxes. Coordinate all compliance audits with the respective government bodies.

Capital Management:

  • Track and report capital spending on an ongoing basis, including turnarounds. Guide projects through the approval process. Verify capital requests in YPPM for completeness and accuracy. Ensure accurate tracking of depreciation and disposal of assets. Manage physical asset counts to meet IFRS requirements.
  • To ensure proper distribution and preparation of financial and operational information to senior management and other outside parties.

Production Accounting:

  • Production related reporting (Production, Inventory, Expenses, Chemicals, etc.).
  • Budget cycle month end and year end reporting. Analysis of product cost information (cost/tonne, trends, variances).

Inventory Management:

  • Ensure accurate presentation and tracking of Yara inventories including chemicals and finished product. Involves coordination with Marketing, Operations, and Shipping.

Natural Gas:

  • Oversee the gas accounting process to ensure accurate reporting and tracking of natural gas transactions through purchases to invoicing and inventory tracking. Represent Yara on the TransGas Customer Dialogue Committee in a backup role to the Plant Manager.

Month End:

  • Perform various duties to help the accounting team close out the month end cycle. Including payroll entries, production accounting, accruals and various levels of reporting and reconciliations.

Credit Management:

  • Oversee the effective management of the accounts receivable process at Yara Belle Plaine to 1) to build sales through the exercise of prudent credit judgment, 2) to maximize cash flow based on payment terms and 3) to control bad debts.

Operational Excellence:

  • Lead continuous improvements by recommending changes to existing procedures and seeking automation, robotics or AI opportunities.

Miscellaneous Projects/Work Groups:

  • Provide accounting and finance assistance and expertise and lead change where required and requested, ex. budget, benchmarking, I/T team planning, and SAP opportunities.

Education, Experience & Skill

  • Professional accounting designation.
  • Strong background in finance and production accounting with at least 5 years experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • A computer background is essential with skills in Microsoft Office and an ability to adapt to new software packages.
  • Highly motivated person.
