Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Community Ministries Worker assists in organization of food bank and distribution of donations. This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs and will run for 8 weeks with 35 hours per week.
This a Fixed Term Contract Position.

Accountabilities:
Core Job Duties:
- Willingness to work within the mission, vision and values of The Salvation Army
- Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect and empathy
- Willingness to be directed by your supervisor in other duties as assigned
- Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for guests, staff, volunteers and partner agencies
- Ensure all people are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
- Arranges for discarding of items that are not usable in accordance with policy
- Maintains confidentiality
- Other duties as assigned
Food Bank Job Duties:
- Loading and unloading boxes and bags, up to 40lbs, donated food
- Sorting and packaging perishable and non-perishable food donations
- Organizing and stocking shelves
- Garbage and recycling disposal
- End of day clean up- sweeping/mopping and disinfecting surfaces
- Hamper building
- Provide emergency assistance to the Intake Worker as required
Thrift Store Job Duties:
- Receiving, sorting and pricing donations
- Keeping the store neat and tidy
- Assist in cashier duties
- Assist in daily cash out
- Sort and hang clothing
Kitchen Helper Job Duties:
- Assist the cook in the preparation of specific food items and with the serving of food, as per Food Safe standards
- Clean the kitchen and kitchen equipment as assigned, as per Food Safe standards
- Wash dishes, saucepans, pots and utensils used in the operation of the kitchen, as per Food Safe standards
- Follow work practices to ensure the efficient delivery of food services
- Follow policy on the use of donated foods
- Maintain a clean working area and perform other cleaning duties as assigned
Shelter Worker Job Duties:
- Monitor the activities of the clients/residents and maintain availability for personal, practical and morale support
- Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
- Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. police, ambulance, urgent situations)
- Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may include doing bed checks
- May carry out inspection of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
- Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
- May serve as Receptionist for Shelter (ie. answer telephone)
- Prepare dining area and food area for each meal
- Keep supplies stocked as needed
- Do regular washroom checks and keep washrooms clean at all times
- Communicate with oncoming shift regarding any outstanding duties not completed or issues
- Maintain Shelter cleanliness. These tasks include, but are not limited to, sweeping & mopping floors, taking out garbage, wiping all surfaces. These duties include the interior and exterior of the building
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY**:**
- This position reports directly to Dave Cusson and Travis Clem
- This position has no direct reports
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Effective distribution of food bank donations or meals
Working Conditions:
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and frequently lift up to 30 pounds with no assistance from others.
- Work in a standing position for long periods.
- The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, lifting, and carrying supplies and walking.
- The performance of the job requires frequent attention to adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:
- Dealing with angry people
- Verbal abuse
- Hot/Steamy environment
- Noisy
- Crowded in some cases
- Pressure of timelines
- Multi-tasking
- May be exposed to the risks of minor harm, injury, or illness due to:
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving objects
- Injury from lifting
- Falling on wet/slippery floors
- Burns, cuts, entering freezers
- Travel within city may be required to pick up food bank donations

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
- First Aid Certificate an asset
- Driver’s license an asset
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Understanding for individuals of diverse social and cultural backgrounds
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $21.84 with a maximum of $26.20.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
