About the role

This posting will be used to fill 1 (One) permanent full-time position working 75 hours bi-weekly. It will establish a 12-month eligibility list which may be used to fill similar positions.

This job is based in the thriving and diverse city of Whitehorse in the beautiful Yukon.

The Department of Health and Social Services aims to promote, protect, and enhance the well-being of Yukon people through a continuum of quality, accessible and appropriate health, and social services.

The Family and Children’s Services Branch promotes and develops the capacity of families and communities to care for and protect vulnerable children and youth while supporting healthy child and family development to maximize the potential of every child in the Yukon. The Branch is responsible for territory-wide delivery of services and programs that support positive and healthy outcomes for children, youth, and their families.

Your impact

As a Placement Resource Social Worker, you are responsible for managing a specialized caseload of community caregivers, placement resources and adoptions files. You will conduct family assessments for caregiver and adoptions applicants, participate in recruitment initiatives, and provide training to caregivers as well as prospective adoptive parents. You will be responsible for caregiver screening and conducting yearly reviews of caregivers to ensure all compliance criteria are maintained. These duties will primarily be carried out in Whitehorse but travel to other Yukon communities may be required for recruitment and assessment of applicants outside Whitehorse.

Essential qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the qualifications below. Selections for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work
  • Experience working with children and families involved with child welfare and community caregiver (foster care) services
  • Experience providing individual or family assessments as well as providing support services to families and children

Desired knowledge, skills and suitability

If selected for an interview, candidates should have, and may be assessed on, the following:

  • Ability to conduct comprehensive family assessments

  • Ability to conduct quality of care reviews in community caregiver (foster) homes

  • Strong conflict resolution skills and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Strong understanding of working with various cultural backgrounds

Conditions of employment

You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.

TB screening, Security clearance including vulnerable sector check, Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent; and Verification of Bachelor of Social Work degree

Job requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

Occasional travel within and outside of the Yukon, Willingness to work extended hours with limited notice including some weekend or evening work; and Exposure to potentially emotional and/or violent clients.
