Reporting to the Lead, Communications, this position provides strategic leadership on media relations and issues management. The Sr. Advisor, Media and Issues serves as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, ensuring timely, coordinated, and credible responses to emerging issues while proactively positioning Recovery Alberta’s work, leadership, and priorities in the public domain. You will contribute to a high-performing communications function by collaborating with a focused, multidisciplinary team to advance shared priorities and deliver results in a dynamic environment. Description:
The Sr. Advisor, Media and Issues develops and executes proactive and reactive media strategies for mental health, addiction, and correctional health services. Acting as the primary contact for media inquiries, the role ensures accurate, consistent responses aligned with organizational and government priorities. Responsibilities include monitoring media activity, preparing executives for interviews, and producing key materials such as statements, releases, and briefing notes, while fostering strong relationships with journalists and government counterparts. The position also leads issues management by identifying emerging risks, developing response strategies, and advising senior leadership on communications implications of operational, clinical, or policy matters. Working closely with legal, clinical, and government partners, the manager ensures unified responses during crises or high-profile situations. Collaboration is central to the role, aligning messaging across Recovery Alberta and partner agencies while supporting transparent communication with communities and stakeholders. Additionally, the manager contributes to communications standards, mentors team members, and upholds professionalism and confidentiality, ensuring timely, accountable information flow during sensitive situations.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Public Affairs, or a related field, with relevant industry experience considered. They bring extensive expertise in media relations, issues management, or public affairs within healthcare, government, or other complex public-sector environments. A combination of education and industry related experience will be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:
They demonstrate proven ability to advise senior leaders in high-pressure situations, exceptional writing and editing skills for executive, media, and government audiences, and a strong understanding of the media landscape, government processes, and public accountability. Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage sensitive information with confidence are essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference could be given to qualified candidates with current experience in Alberta's health system.
