Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
This role supports the delivery of therapeutic recreation services as part of the interdisciplinary team and under the direction of the program manager, in alignment with professional standards and program goals. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Incumbents may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.
- Support the planning and delivery of individual and group recreation programs in alignment with therapeutic goals.
- Implement, document, and monitor client participation in recreation activities, contributing to care planning as appropriate.
- Maintain program materials, equipment, and activity areas to ensure safety and readiness.
- Compile activity statistics and assist in preparing calendars and program documentation.
- Orient and support new staff, students, and volunteers involved in recreation services as directed by the supervisor.
- Operate program vehicles for client outings and manage petty cash or activity-related funds, where applicable.
- Represent the organization in a respectful and professional manner, reflecting the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
- Other related duties as assigned.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal: Ministry Unit leadership, staff, and volunteers.
External: community members and community groups/organizations, guests/clients of ministry unit in person.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports directly to the Life Enrichment and Volunteer Manager.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- May be involved in minor financial transactions on a regular or relief basis and is expected to exercise sound judgment in the use of organizational and personal resources.
- May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash, including disbursements and collections.
- May be responsible for maintaining and tracking fixed asset inventories.
- May hold material responsibility for the proper care and maintenance of equipment.
- May have access to confidential and sensitive information and is expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is primarily performed indoors within the ministry unit/facility, some activities may be performed outdoors in good weather conditions.
- The role requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting of items up to 30 lbs, keyboarding.
- The work environment is generally positive; however, the incumbent may occasionally interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours.
- This position may occasionally require local travel or transportation-related responsibilities.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

Post-secondary education in Recreation Therapy.

Certification in First Aid + CPR and Food Safety.

Valid driver’s license and clear driver's abstract are required.

Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
Experience and Knowledge Requirements:
- Up to a year of related experience required.
- Proficiency in MS office.
- An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to organize and complete program planning according to timelines.
- Ability to provide safe and competent care within the scope of practice as defined by this position description.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with staff, clients, families, volunteers, and visitors.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $25.73 to $26.06 with a maximum of $26.39.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
