As a Director, Studies & Technology , you will play a critical role in driving excellence across study management, business development, and operational strategy. You will oversee study performance, mitigate risks, ensure compliance with quality assurance standards, and conduct technical audits. Your leadership will shape strategic planning, support proposals, strengthen client relationships, and foster innovation.
Additionally, you will develop a three-year growth plan for the Mining & Metals sector, build high-performing teams, implement best practices, and monitor budgets to achieve revenue targets. What you can expect to do here:
Study Management
Monitor study performance, identifying and mitigating risks to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
Manage execution of commercial risk management process and strategy within studies.
Participate in monthly project meetings to review study reporting and alignment with the sector business plan.
Take on the responsibility of Project Sponsor as required.
Review project discipline performance on projects and in the event of unsatisfactory performance, propose an action plan to realign the results.
Ensure that quality assurance procedures and programs are adhered to by all engineering personnel. Perform technical audits on projects in accordance with the established QA program and ensure the timely implementation of all identified corrective actions.
Ensure study compliance with regulatory requirements
Establish a yearly training program that will assure that study managers and technical staff are up-to date with the industry best practices
Provide input to debottlenecking and troubleshooting studies.
Business Development
Lead strategic planning and development through a deep understanding of the business environment, competitive pressures, customer requirements and market trends.
Promote staff participation in conferences and seminars by developing technical papers, serving on technical panels and presenting at conferences.
Review engineering budgets and execution strategies to support proposals.
Support Proposal, Project Management, Project Services, Commercial & Risk teams in the go-no-go process to determine alignment of sector targets and deliverables.
Collaborate with sales, engineering, and procurement teams to align project goals and objectives.
Participate in business development activities including to proposal preparation and Client relationship development.
Operational
Develop a 3-year strategic plan to grow the study market for the WSP Mining & Metals sector with a specific focus on critical minerals and supporting mine infrastructure.
Develop a team of study managers focussed on study pursuits and execution in the Mining & Metals sector.
Ensure the Resources P&L teams across Canada have the necessary technical capabilities to successfully pursue and execute study mandates. This entails working with the Resources P&L Directors to review and maintain technical capabilities and to make key strategic hires.
Work closely with the Operational team to finalize and implement standards and processes related to study execution and continuously evaluate and improve study processes to enhance productivity and quality.
Implement best practices and innovative solutions to optimize project workflows and resource allocation related to studies.
Monitor budget adherence and targets throughout the year related to study revenue targets.
Keep up-to-date with industry standards and technology. This also includes engineering software updates and identification of new tools to improve department efficiencies and Client offerings.
Adhere, support and promote Company Quality Management System, HSE requirements, policies and procedures.
What you'll bring to WSP:

Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering.

P.Eng status in any Canadian province.

20+ years relevant experience including experience in leadership and supervisory roles.

Experience working on metallurgical projects (mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, etc.) in extractive metallurgy for base and precious metals.

Good understanding of regulatory compliance for public disclosure (NI 43-101, SK 1300, JORC, etc.).

Experience in plant operations and commissioning.

Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the mining and metals sector and be thoroughly familiar with typical business and contract models employed in the industry and hold a wide network of professional industry contacts.

Demonstrate the implementation of innovative approaches to engineering execution in past roles.

Knowledge of process safety methodologies.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
