Job Description
The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County is looking for an RPN or RN student to learn the practical skills for working in a palliative care environment. The Hospice provides care at no cost in our two Hospice Residences (Windsor and Erie Shores/Leamington), through the Community Palliative Medicine Program and through our Wellness Programs and Services.
The goal of this educational endowment is to provide a nursing student with an opportunity to mentor alongside a Hospice staff nurse to enhance and apply school-based knowledge to real-life patient care scenarios with a focus on end-of-life care. The student will align nursing knowledge and experiences with the Hospice vision to provide quality, memorable care for our community.
The schedule is flexible. The Nursing Student will be scheduled 8-12hr shifts on a part-time basis with a total compensation of $10, 000 for the school year.
After one year of nursing mentorship, the student will be able to:
- Strengthen critical thinking
- Embrace collaboration and teamwork
- Increase overall communication skills
- Improve comfort to engage in goals of care conversations
- Enhance knowledge to assess and manage pain and other symptoms for individuals with a life limiting illness
- Identify common symptoms of disease progression and the end-of-life process
The nursing student will demonstrate this by:
- Completing accurate assessments for pain and other symptoms at end of life using evidence informed screening tools such as ESAS and PPS
- Providing pharmacological and non-pharmacological symptom management
- Demonstrating best practice medication administration
- Understanding the importance of the interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrating high emotional stability and continuous positivity in their interactions with patients and their loved ones
- Promoting equity inclusivity with any person including vulnerable, marginalized or underserviced populations
- Demonstrating culturally sensitivity while working with a diverse patient population
- Demonstrating proficiency as a team player
- Accepting responsibility and accountability for their actions
- Communicating effectively with the team
- Demonstrating accurate documentation in Cerner
- Providing an accurate and comprehensive shift handoff
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The nursing student will keep a journal to document learning experiences during the year.
- The nursing student will document 3 SMART goals and review with the Hospice manager on a regular basis.
- The nursing student will provide one educational session to the staff.
- The nursing student will comply with all Hospice of Windsor and Essex County policies and protocols.
REQUIREMENTS:
- RN or RPN student currently enrolled full-time in a nursing program
- Interest in palliative and end-of-life care
