The Opportunity
McElhanney is seeking an Intermediate to Senior Geotechnical Engineer to expand the technical depth of our growing Industrial & Materials Division in Kamloops, BC. We are looking for an engineer who is passionate about geotechnical engineering fundamentals, advanced analysis, and solving complex ground engineering challenges.
This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants to remain firmly on the technical career path-developing subject matter expertise, delivering high-quality engineering analysis, and contributing to technically challenging mining, industrial, infrastructure, and land development projects.
We are seeking someone who is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and energized by the numbers: soil parameters, settlement behaviour, slope factors of safety, bearing capacities, seepage modelling, instrumentation data, and design optimization.
You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and field professionals while building advanced expertise in geotechnical design and analysis.
This role is designated as a safety sensitive position.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Plan and execute geotechnical investigations including drilling programs, CPTs, test pits, instrumentation, and laboratory testing coordination.
- Interpret subsurface conditions and establish geotechnical design parameters.
- Perform detailed geotechnical analyses including slope stability, settlement and consolidation, bearing capacity, lateral earth pressures, retaining systems, seepage and groundwater impacts, pile axial/lateral capacity, embankment performance, liquefaction and seismic response (where applicable).
- Prepare technical reports, design memoranda, recommendations, and specifications.
- Review field and laboratory data sets and translate findings into practical design recommendations.
- Provide construction-phase geotechnical reviews for excavations, foundations, retaining systems, and earthworks.
- Support forensic reviews and troubleshooting of geotechnical performance issues.
- Collaborate with civil, structural, environmental, survey, and materials teams on integrated project solutions.
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Civil, Geological, or Geotechnical Engineering.
- 10–15 years of geotechnical consulting or applied engineering experience.
- P.Eng. in BC or eligible for registration.
- Strong experience in geotechnical investigation, interpretation, and design.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
- We’re looking for someone who: enjoys engineering analysis and problem-solving, takes pride in technical accuracy and quality deliverables, likes working with data, models, calculations, wants to deepen technical expertise rather than move into management and is curious, engaged, and motivated to keep learning.
- Preferred Technical Experience: Slope stability software (GeoStudio / Slide / Rocscience), Settlement analysis (Settle3 / equivalent), Numerical modelling (PLAXIS / FLAC / Geo5), Foundation design (shallow and deep), Earthworks and compaction specifications, Mining / industrial geotechnics, Seismic or liquefaction analysis.
- Codes / Standards Familiarity: Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, BC Building Code, National Building Code of Canada, Relevant CSA / ASTM standards.
What Can We Offer You?
The salary range for this position is $105,000 - $165,000 per annum.
