Work Location: Hybrid workplace environment: on-site, National Gallery of Canada, 380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa up to 3 days per week based on operational requirements and 2 workdays remote.

** This position is designated for an Indigenous individual, preferably from the North. Individuals who are not Indigenous will not be considered.

The National Gallery of Canada is offering a two‑year Inuit Community Engagement mentorship within its Indigenous Ways and Decolonization (IWD) and Learning and Community Engagement (LCE) departments. The mentee will focus on developing their skills in community engagement and outreach programming, working closely with the Indigenous curatorial team on the upcoming circumpolar exhibition Qillaniq as well as support an upcoming retrospective by a senior Inuit artist. This mentorship reflects the Gallery’s commitment to northern experiences within its large institutional presence.

About Learning and Community Engagement

The Learning and Community Engagement (LCE) department at the National Gallery of Canada creates welcoming and inspiring opportunities for people of all ages to connect with art. Guided by a commitment to inclusion, relevance, and collaboration, LCE develops programs that invite visitors to explore, learn, and participate—onsite, online, and within their communities. From intergenerational art‑making experiences and family‑friendly creative spaces to guided tours, artist talks, and special events, the department designs engagement that reflects the diverse needs and interests of audiences across Canada.

LCE works to strengthen relationships between the Gallery and communities. Through flexible and collaborative partnerships, thoughtful programming, and accessible approaches, the department strives to foster belonging and ensure that everyone can experience art in ways that are meaningful, joyful, and connected.

Job Summary

Reporting to and working closely with the IWD Senior Manager, the Inuit Community Engagement Mentee is responsible for community outreach and programming support in collaboration with the LCE department. This position will help organize northern artist activities such as workshops, panels, tours, and public education throughout the circumpolar exhibitions. Supporting in connecting with Inuit and northern artists in the Ottawa region and across northern communities to develop ongoing programming within the Gallery.

The Inuit Community Engagement Mentee should be self-motivated, have an understanding of cultural and institutional processes and is highly organized with the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbal.

Requirements

  • Degree from an accredited institution with experience directly relevant to the scope of this position.
  • Experience working within Indigenous organizations or with Indigenous Knowledge traditions and protocols.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while maintain an attention to detail.
  • Ability to attend pre-arranged functions/activities outside normal business hours.
  • Must have access to a secure and reliable internet connection with secured WIFI capability.
  • This position may include travelling to remote communities (when it is safe to do so).
  • Friendly, optimistic disposition with strong interpersonal skills with a high level of professionalism and discretion is required.
  • Experience working with SharePoint and Microsoft Teams.
