About the role

CHILD AND YOUTH PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

At Trico Centre, we deliver high-quality recreation programs that are fun, engaging, and promote healthy physical and social development. We are seeking an experienced recreation professional with a proven track record in staff leadership and program management. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in recreational programming for children and youth (ages 0–14), combined with the ability to recruit, train, mentor, and lead a large staff team in a positive and progressive manner. A strong candidate will have the vision to develop innovative programs while ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Recreation, Physical Literacy, Child and Youth Care, or Education, or an equivalent combination of education and recreation-related experience
  • Minimum of 5+ years’ professional experience in recreation program development and delivery
  • Minimum of 5 years’ supervisory and leadership experience in a recreation setting
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification
  • Strong background in program planning, scheduling, and evaluation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and recreation software systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to manage customer concerns effectively
  • Enhanced Police Information Check (E-PIC) required if 18+ (must be valid within 6 months)
  • HIGH FIVE® Certification considered an asset

Experience & Skills

  • Deep understanding of child, preschool, and youth recreation programming
  • Skilled in staff training, supervision, and performance management
  • Proven ability to develop and manage budgets responsibly
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to motivate and build cohesive teams
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities
  • Professional and composed in high-pressure or fast-paced environments
  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends as required

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Lead, mentor, and support the Child and Youth Programs Coordinator and a diverse group of instructors across multiple recreation program areas (gym, sports, arts, dance, preschool, day camps, skating, and family programs)
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate staff performance, ensuring high standards of service delivery
  • Develop and oversee staff training and in-service programs to build a strong, skilled team
  • Manage payroll, scheduling, and wage reviews for departmental staff
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work culture that reflects Trico Centre’s values

Program Development & Management

  • Oversee the planning, development, and delivery of a wide range of recreational programs for ages 0–14
  • Ensure programs are engaging, age-appropriate, and aligned with Trico Centre’s commitment to healthy child development
  • Monitor and evaluate programs to ensure quality and effectiveness, adjusting as needed
  • Research new trends in recreation to maintain a competitive and innovative program offering

Budget & Operations

  • Develop, monitor, and manage departmental operating and capital budgets
  • Track performance and adjust to meet financial goals and service expectations
  • Contribute to revenue generation strategies through effective program design and implementation

Marketing & Communication

  • Collaborate with Marketing to promote programs and services
  • Provide accurate and timely program content for seasonal brochures and guides
  • Act as departmental lead in addressing patron concerns and ensuring a high standard of customer service

General

  • Support Trico Centre community events and initiatives
  • Attend supervisor meetings and organizational training
  • Carry out other duties as required in support of Trico Centre’s mission

Schedule:

Full-time flexible hours per week. Employees will be scheduled for forty hours per week, 8 consecutive hours per day of which 7.5 hours are considered work time and .5 hours (30 minutes) is a paid break (7 days per week, 16 hours per day) in keeping with the needs of department and Trico Centre. A monthly schedule will be developed cooperatively with the Programs Manager. Any overtime hours must be preapproved by the department supervisor in advance of working the hours.
