Job Description
Job Summary
Reporting to the Clinical Team Manager Community Mental Health, the Mental Health Supervisor makes an impact on the health and health equity of Niagara residents through providing clinical supervision, support and direction to staff of the Mental Health Program. The Mental Health Supervisor contributes to the development, maintenance and evaluation of clinical services within the program and provides part-time therapeutic and consultative services to clients and families as required.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in health or social science
- Master’s degree preferred
Knowledge
- Three (3) years’ experience in a clinical mental health setting
- Previous experience working with serious mental health diagnosis and best practice standards within a mental health setting
- Registration in respective professional college
- Extensive knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses, assessment, treatment and medication is preferred
- Previous supervisory experience is preferred
Responsibilities
People Leadership: Supervises staff, coordinating and planning work, providing work direction, assigning tasks and projects, determining methods and procedures to be used, monitoring quality of work, resolving problems and ensuring assigned results are achieved. (50% of time)
- Enables results with the organization’s human capital strategy to foster employee engagement.
- In conjunction with the Manager provides training and development, coaching and discipline when necessary, and manages staff recruitment.
- Ensures focus is service excellence, communication/transparency, innovation, and data integrity and work flow integration.
- Ensures staff has the information and resources to make successful plans and decisions.
- Ensures all people related issues, including recruitment, grievances and labour relations issues, are aligned to HR and Corporate standards and practices.
- Ensures the processing of time and attendance for staff, ordering and recording of office supplies, coverage in satellite offices
- Schedules and assigns work to team which aligns with strategic, operational and program level objectives
- Proactively identifies administrative opportunities for team to consolidate work and support other public health division’s/programs
- Develops, coordinates and oversees the ordering, tracking and distribution of purchases and payments of administrative supplies for the program
- Resolves complaints, recording the nature of the complaints and monitoring patterns and making recommendations regarding changes in policies and practices and address issues
- Helps to break down barriers to employee success, ensuring collaboration and cooperation with other teams within their division and department
- Ensures Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) policies, programs and practices are implemented, and maintained. This includes workplace inspections, monitoring, accident reporting and investigations, and ensuring any observed hazards or lapses in the functioning of OH&S processes, and other OH&S concerns are responded to promptly.
- Ensures all individuals under supervision have been informed of hazards and instructed on the necessary risk control and emergency response measures;
Provides consultation/counseling services (20% of time)
- Provision of individual, conjoint, and family consultation/counseling to a selected number of clients
- Provision of health teaching of clients and family members related to mental health concerns
- Client referrals to appropriate community agencies
Liaison and Consultation activities (20% of time)
- Participation in liaison and consultative activities with health and social work personnel in hospitals and related community agencies
- Committee membership within Public Health, related to mental health issues
Program Support (10% of time)
- Manages and administers annual and multi-year Capital and Operating budgets for which they are delegated authority ensuring support of Council’s objectives, financial transparency and accountability, monitoring budget adherence, identifying and explaining variances, and financial reporting is effectively managed in compliance with corporate financial policies. Administer and approve the acquisition of goods and services for their direct reports in accordance with the procurement policy
- Facilitate program meetings and contribute to ongoing program development
- Participation and leadership in program evaluation and outcome monitoring activities
Special Requirements
- Must provide own transportation and be able to travel throughout the Niagara Region to other offices, work locations, or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons. Employees who use their personal vehicles for approved Region business shall ensure they are adequately insured with their personal insurance carrier. It is the employee's responsibility to possess and maintain a valid driver's license of the appropriate class to carry out their job in accordance with Corporate Policy
- Support clients in their travel to locations in the community when it is relevant to the client’s recovery plan as per program policy (which allows the option of staff transporting clients in their personal vehicle)
- In accordance with Corporate Criminal Records Check policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records check, including vulnerable sector screening, and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate prior to commencing employment
- Be available to work flexible hours including weekend and/or evening hours as required
- Vaccinations as recommended in Public Health policy
- Regional staff strive to enable the strategic priorities of council and the organization through the completion of their work. Staff carry out their work by demonstrating the corporate values.
