About the role
Applications are now being accepted for a Part Time Psychiatric Assessment Nurse to work in Emergency. As well as providing emergency care to emergency patients, the psychiatric assessment nurse will conduct mental health and risk assessments of patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with a mental health crisis. Successful candidates will provide full scope of nursing care to mental health patients requiring extended treatment and care while in the ED. The successful applicant’s commitment to this position is 37.5 hours per week and will be required to work Monday-Sunday 0700-1500.
Education
- Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses
- CNA Certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing preferred
- ACLS & BCLS certification within one (1) year
- Certified in Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention (NVCPI) preferred
- Knowledge of Mental Health and Addictions best practices and processes, ED standards of care and current legislation (i.e. Mental Health Act, FIPPA, PHIPA and Mental Health Care Consent Act)
- Triage certification required
- IV therapy experience
Skills and Ability

Excellent time management/organizational skills

Demonstrated skills in day to day problem solving including but not limited to: patient safety and conflict resolution

Ability to lead and implement change effectively with a focus on patient centered care and patient safety

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary and inter-professional collaborative care team

Demonstrated ability to promote staff development, quality improvement and patient and family centered care

Ability to use related information system tools (i.e. MS4, EDIS, Oculys, OTN)

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)

Crisis management skills

Care of non-mental health Emergency patients in the Critical Care Department will be required
Work Experience
- 2 years recent experience working in an Emergency Department preferred
- 5 years recent psychiatric and mental health nursing experience in hospital or community based preferred
