Salary(s): Nurse 1 (NN1) $42.85 - $52.56 per hour Plus Qualification Pay, if applicable; Northern Nurse (NF1) $49.27 - $60.44 per hour Plus Qualification Pay, if applicable

Graduate Nurses may be considered at a rate of: $39.27 hourly. Licensed Practical Nurses may be considered at the rate of: $36.70 to $43.39 hourly. Registered Nurses may be considered at the rate of: $42.85 to $52.56 hourly. Relocation Assistance of up to $5,000 is available for eligible nurses willing to relocate to Manitoba to work.

Consider a career in Correctional Nursing! This unique opportunity will be of interest to a dynamic and broadly-experienced nurse who would like to become a member of a professional medical unit that provides assessment and treatment to clients within a correctional environment. This environment is highly autonomous and requires nursing staff to work independently and in consultation with the on-call physician. This is a challenging, fast paced, dynamic environment providing a unique experience not seen in traditional nursing roles.

Nurses who are interested in corrections are encouraged to tour the correctional centres to get firsthand experience of what it would be like to be a Correctional Nurse. Nurses will witness and understand the level of security and protection our health care workers experience. About the Centres:

The Winnipeg Remand Centre (WRC) is a pre-trial detention centre located at 141 Kennedy Street in downtown Winnipeg, across from the Law Courts building. It houses people waiting for court decisions on their charges or placement in correctional centres. It is minimum, medium and maximum-security facility.

The Manitoba Youth Centre (MYC), the largest youth correctional centre in Manitoba, is located at 170 Doncaster Street in Winnipeg. Male and female youth admitted to MYC have been charged as young offenders.

The Milner Ridge Correctional Centre (MRCC) is located in the Agassiz Provincial Forest, southeast of Lac du Bonnet. It is a minimum and medium security facility for adult males.

The Brandon Correctional Centre (BCC) is located in the northeast corner of that city. It is primarily a medium-security centre. It also provides Western Manitoba with short-term holding for young offenders and adult females.

The Headingley Correctional Centre (HCC) is located on Highway #1 just west of Headingley on 20 acres of land beside the Assiniboine River. It is the largest provincial correctional facility with minimum, medium and maximum security for adult males.

The Women’s Correctional Centre (WCC) is located at 31 Routledge Avenue in Headingley, Manitoba. Completed and opened early in 2012. It is a multi-level security facility.

The Pas Correctional Centre (TPCC) is located next to the provincial court building in The Pas. It is minimum, medium and maximum security facility for adult males and adult females. It includes a temporary holding unit for young offenders. T

Duties:

The incumbent is responsible for providing care and treatment of the physically and mentally ill inmates in a correctional environment. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Health Services Supervisor and Health Services Manager in the delivery of health care to inmates. Responsibilities include: responding to emergency situations; assessment of immediate acute and chronic health care needs including health stabilization; medical examinations; inmate/staff education; administering of medication; treatment of illness/injuries; and crisis intervention. Triages and refers clients to appropriate health care professionals; develops treatment plans for inmates; implements, assesses and refers to programs and interventions in liaison with other professionals. As a member of the medical team, the incumbent must be able to work with considerable independence and without direct supervision. The work is performed in accordance with prescribed regulations and recognized practices.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Experience performing clinical assessments.

  • Experience with patient care planning.

  • Effective verbal communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working independently.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Experience in a similar environment such as emergency, medical, surgical or community programs.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of communicable diseases, main signs and symptoms of alcohol or drug misuse.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

  • Nursing Licensure with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM), or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM), College of Licenced Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPN) - in good standing

  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Security Check, Satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check and Internal Screening Check (must be vaild within 6 months)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Professional Certification

  • Satisfactory Certificate of Medical Fitness

  • Ability to work days, evenings, nights and weekends is required
