Climate Change and Child Health Specialist, Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute
About the role
The Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Climate Change and Child Health Specialist. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This role will be part of the One Child Every Child Program, a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) initiative, with a vision for all Canadian children to be the healthiest, most empowered and thriving in the world.
The Climate Change & Child Health Specialist will report to One Child Every Child Program Manager and support the Climate Change program. The work will be flexible and vary from week to week.
Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Scientific Collaboration and Research Support
- Collaborate closely with team members on all scientific aspects of the program, including conceptualizing, designing, and implementing research projects
- Provide expert feedback on study ideas, research protocols, data analysis plans, and manuscripts to ensure scientific rigor and clinical relevance
- Contribute to the development of grant proposals, progress reports, and other research-related documentation
- Support integration of pediatric and clinical perspectives into the program's climate and child health research portfolio
- Participate in regular team meetings, journal clubs, and internal research reviews
Dissemination, Training, and Outreach
- Actively participate in dissemination and outreach efforts with external stakeholders, including academic, governmental, and community partners
- Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting two annual workshops or trainings within OCEC focused on climate change and child health
- Contribute to community outreach activities, providing a pediatric and epidemiological perspective in discussions, presentations, and educational sessions
- Collaborate in the development of communication materials (e.g., policy briefs, infographics, newsletters) translating research findings for non-specialist audiences
- Represent the program at conferences, symposia, and professional meetings to share results and strengthen partnerships
Professional Engagement and Networking
- Serve as a liaison between the program and professional pediatric organizations, facilitating information exchange and collaboration opportunities
- Strengthen ties with medical education programs, supporting integration of climate change and child health topics into pediatric curricula and continuing education
- Identify opportunities for joint initiatives, training, and advocacy with relevant professional societies and academic institutions
Program Development and Strategic Input
- Contribute to the long-term vision and strategic planning of the program, particularly regarding pediatric health priorities within climate change initiatives
- Provide input on potential new areas of research, collaborations, and funding aligned with the program's mission
- Help identify opportunities for continuous improvement
Qualifications / Requirements:
- The key qualifications and expertise required for the position include
- Medical Degree and completed residency program within pediatrics
- Epidemiological degree
- Track record of peer-review publications and presentations at national and international conferences
- Expertise in climate change is an asset
- Experience in delivering trainings and workshops is an asset
- A combination of experience, training and education will be considered
