About the role

Safety Built Into Every Project

The Safety Coordinator (Construction) is a key contributor to both project-level safety execution and the continuous improvement of Industra’s corporate Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) program.

This role goes beyond coordination—acting as a trusted advisor to project teams and leadership, supporting risk-based planning, strengthening field execution, and ensuring regulatory compliance across jurisdictions. A key component of this role is building strong, credible relationships across the organization, particularly with field teams, by fostering trust, open communication, and collaboration.

The successful candidate is someone who becomes a go-to partner for superintendents and project teams—engaging early, providing practical guidance, and being the first call before issues arise. They bring strong construction safety experience, a proactive mindset, and the ability to influence teams to drive a high-performance safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

Project Safety Leadership & Field Support

  • Support project teams in developing and implementing Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs), hazard assessments, and incident reporting processes.

  • Partner closely with superintendents to proactively plan for high-risk activities (e.g., confined space, lifting, excavation, silica exposure), ensuring appropriate controls are in place prior to execution.

  • Provide practical, field-based guidance to support safe work planning and execution.

  • Conduct regular site visits to verify implementation, address challenges, and ensure alignment between planning and field conditions.

  • Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.

Subcontractor & Prime Contractor Support

  • Act as a liaison between internal teams, subcontractors, consultants, and regulatory bodies.

  • Support prime contractor responsibilities, including subcontractor coordination, compliance, and high-risk activity planning.

  • Ensure consistent safety expectations and adherence to company and regulatory standards across all stakeholders.

Corporate OHS Program & COR Management

  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the corporate HSE program, including policies, procedures, and standard documentation.

  • Play an active role in COR certification and maintenance, including COR Ontario (IHSA), ensuring audit readiness and program alignment.

  • Contribute to the standardization of safety practices across projects.

Digital Systems & Safety Performance

  • Support and optimize the use of safety management systems (e.g., Site App Pro, Procore) to improve reporting consistency and efficiency.

  • Monitor safety performance through KPIs, dashboards, and reporting tools.

  • Analyze trends and recommend improvements to strengthen safety outcomes across projects.

Audit, Compliance & Regulatory Management

  • Support audit readiness and compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including WorkSafeBC, WSIB, Ministry of Labour (Ontario), and Service Canada.

  • Coordinate responses to inspections, regulatory requirements, and compliance initiatives.

  • Participate in internal audits, gap assessments, and corrective action tracking.

Training & Competency Development

  • Identify training needs and support the coordination of certifications and refresher programs.

  • Provide guidance, tools, and resources to project teams to strengthen safety knowledge and execution.

  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and accountability.

Meetings & Leadership Support

  • Support and facilitate safety-related meetings, including superintendent meetings, Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, and leadership updates.

  • Prepare materials, track action items, and ensure follow-through.

  • Contribute to alignment and communication of safety priorities across the organization.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5–8+ years of progressive experience in construction safety, ideally within heavy civil or infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to train and lead our employees to ISO 45001 certification
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of WorkSafeBC, OHSA (Ontario), and applicable federal regulations.
  • Experience supporting multi-project environments and collaborating with field teams.
  • Proven ability to balance compliance requirements with practical field application.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management software (e.g., Site App Pro, Procore).
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and willingness to travel to project sites.

Certifications (Preferred / Required)

  • COR Auditor Certification (or actively working toward)
  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CRST designation (preferred)
  • NCSO, CHSC, or equivalent designation considered an asset
  • Standard First Aid certification
