THE ROLE

As a member of the peopleCare Activities team, the BSO Recreation Aide will follow established policies, procedures and standards. This position participates in the implementation of programs to meet the various physical, psychological, social, recreational and spiritual needs of residents. The Program and Support Services Aide will assist in monitoring the needs and progress of the residents.

Reports to: Director of Programs

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adhere to the philosophy of peopleCare BSO teams.
  • Assists in implementing group and individual life enrichment programs (e.g., exercise, crafts, outings).
  • Provides recreation therapy activities based on company policy, care plans, and physician’s orders.
  • Monitors and reports resident behaviour and participation to registered staff; observes for significant changes.
  • Leads and evaluates therapeutic interventions for residents with responsive behaviours or complex diagnoses.
  • Assists with feeding residents and transporting them to/from programs and meals as needed.
  • Sets up and tidies activity areas to ensure readiness, safety, and program flow.
  • Maintains professional documentation aligned with regulatory standards (e.g., BSO indicators).
  • Collaborates with other teams, families, and external providers to develop personalized care strategies.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary care conferences, BSO committee meetings, and care planning discussions.
  • Completes and maintains accurate program and resident documentation
  • Demonstrates resident family care partner focus and commitment to the Mission, Vision, Values and goals of BSO and respective partner agencies.
  • Engages in reflective practice and supports program evaluation to enhance recreation service effectiveness.
  • Promotes engagement in programs across residents, families, team members, and volunteers.
  • Mentors and provides feedback to recreation assistants to support effective documentation and program delivery.
  • Implements best practices in dementia, delirium, mental health, and substance use care.
  • Supports safe resident transitions into the home through tailored programming and collaboration.
  • Participates in in-service education and facilitates staff training on responsive behaviour approaches.
  • Follows all departmental policies, infection control, sanitation, and safety guidelines.
  • Reports all incidents, accidents, and resident concerns promptly; complies with WSIB documentation.
  • Cooperates with the organization’s Return to Work Program and demonstrates health and safety compliance.
  • Upholds the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation.
  • Functions under direct supervision, with no signing authority.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 1 year progressive related experience
  • 2 year diploma in Degree/diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, Behaviour Sciences, Social Service Work, or equivalent
  • 6 months in this job to reach competency in role
  • Experience with working with older adults and care partners considered an asset
  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) basics training required
