Easter Seals Alberta is a provincial not-for-profit organization that has been in existence for 70 years. Easter Seals McQueen Home: Easter Seals Alberta’s McQueen Home in Edmonton is a nine-bedroom home for individuals living with a disability who, due to their high personal care needs, would be unable to live independently without support. These individuals are able to connect and actively participate in their community, including volunteering, attending courses, working part-time, and spending time with family and friends. The home offers safety and security for individuals by providing 24/7 staffing, including a medical team. The disabilities and medical conditions of the individuals vary and currently include Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Spina Bifida.
As LPN, you will:
- Embrace a culture of continuous learning and development to ensure all individuals, families, professionals, and the ESA team have access to the most current information and resources.
- Provide individuals, families, and professionals with family-centered care through empathy, compassion, and understanding, consistently ensuring a high degree of service and support.
- Communicate appropriately and effectively with all team members. Encourage, support, and empower all team members to be the best version of themselves.
- Respect and follow office procedures, policies, and protocol.
- Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice practices and principles within the organization.
- Adapt to emergent needs internally with colleagues and externally with families if and where needed.
- Build organizational excellence, a collaborative working environment, and a positive culture.
Responsibilities: Resident Support
- Administer medications, treatments, and interventions in accordance with physician orders and best practices. Including Wound and Catheter Care.
- Provide leadership to the HCA team Ensure consistent application of best practices at McQueen
- Lead the training of HCA’s on the organization’s medical policies and procedures, including emergency response.
- Daily Living Assistance: Aid residents with personal care, tasks, ensuring a clean and comfortable environment.
- Mobility Support: Assist with transfers, including helping individuals safely move in and out of bed.
- Emotional Engagement: Foster meaningful interactions by engaging with residents through reading, conversation, and active listening to promote emotional well-being.
- Documentation and Reporting: Accurately document and report any incidents, health changes, or care updates to ensure high-quality care and compliance.
- Resident Monitoring: Continuously observe residents’ well-being, reporting any health concerns or changes to ensure proactive support.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of the residents’ physical, emotional, and psychosocial health on admission and regularly thereafter.
- Communicate effectively with residents, families, and the healthcare team to provide updates on health status, treatment plans, and changes in condition.
- Collaborate with physicians, allied health professionals, and the broader care team to develop and review treatment plans.
- Serve as a liaison between residents, their families, and the care team, advocating for residents' preferences and ensuring family members are well-informed.
- Provide immediate first aid and coordinate emergency medical services when necessary.
Qualifications:
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in Alberta.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Experience working in a continuing care setting is an asset.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
- Strong bedside nursing, clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with residents, families, and the healthcare team.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, with a focus on dignity and respect for residents.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards, infection control protocols, and health & safety practices.
Other:
- This position is 40 hours/week Day Shift (7am-3pm)
- This position will require work at McQueen Home in Edmonton
- Ability to work on a rotating schedule, including every second weekend
- A Police Information Check and a Vulnerable Sector Search are conditions of employment.
Working Conditions:
- Physical demands include lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and abilities.
