Work outside while helping protect our environment against pests! Join the Pest Management Team and be a key contributor in ensuring the City of Edmonton's urban forest is maintained for everyone to enjoy.
What will you do?
- Collect branches on site from City Forestry crews as they systematically conduct boulevard and park tree pruning
- Conduct and develop surveys to monitor mosquito, tree pest, aquatic invertebrate, bat, bird, insect and invasive species populations from within
- Edmonton and surrounding region
- Collect, analyze and identify insect and disease samples from field sites across the City of Edmonton
- Conduct primary and literary research into insects and insect management, including biological controls
- Assist in public education programs related to pest and disease concerns, and value of the urban forest
- Conduct laboratory rearing and identification of insect and disease samples
- Conduct pest plant surveys and monitor weed biocontrols
- Conduct field assessments and experimental designs
- Prepare and photograph live and dead insect and disease specimens for reference collection
- Provide information to and resolve inquiries from the public regarding pest and related disease concerns
- Assist with the enforcement of regulations to prevent invasive pests
- Assist with phytosanitary inspections at the City tree nursery
- Maintain records, input and analyze data, and assist in the writing of reports related to the pest management program
- Other duties as required
Qualifications:
- Completion of a Degree program in biological sciences, with major course work in zoological or botanical science OR
- Completion of a 2 year diploma in biological sciences or equivalent and a minimum of 2 years experience in the biological sciences field
- Previous knowledge or experience in branch sampling, insect trapping and identification
- Experience with microscopy and conducting laboratory rearing
Skills required for success:
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills
- Excellent presentation skills
- Demonstrated problem solving, analytical, interpersonal and team skills, and good attention to detail
- Proficiency in Google Applications
- Ability to prepare a broad range of maps, graphs, charts and other illustrative material

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
- 7:30 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday
- Some evening and weekend work may be required
- Ability to work in inclement weather, manage insects’ bites, and move through various (i.e. wet, rocky, etc.) terrain
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
