Project Description: The United for Care-sensitive Approaches to Rights and Empowerment (UCARE) Project is a five-year project (2024-2029) funded by Global Affairs Canada that seeks to enhance the realization of women and adolescent girls' rights to equal distribution of domestic work and reduced burden of unpaid care work in Northern Ghana.
UCARE works collaboratively with national partners, regional and local governments to create an evidence-based, gender-responsive and care-sensitive policy and programming environment, and with families in northern Ghana to improve the agency and decision making of women and adolescent girls to exercise their rights related to recognized and valued unpaid care work. The UCARE project partners with local organizations SEND, NETRIGHT and women's rights organizations using the Gender Model Families approach to recognize, reduce and redistribute the burden of UCW more equitably within households. UCARE will be implemented in 10 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Northern, Northeast and Savannah regions, covering both urban and rural communities, reaching 225,000 women and men, and adolescent girls and boys.

This Volunteer position is with SEND Ghana, a key UCARE partner organization. SEND Ghana implements the Gender Model Families program reaching up to 50,000 families in three northern regions of Ghana. The Volunteer will work out of the SEND Ghana office in Tamale, Northern region. The overall purpose of this position is to strengthen Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) capabilities of the SEND UCARE team and the three Women's Rights Organizations working closely with SEND - and their grassroot allies in operational communities. The volunteer is expected to be embedded with the SEND Team to participate in work planning sessions, community, district and regional level activities of UCARE.
This placement is ideal for recent graduates and early-career professionals looking to launch a career in international development. You'll gain practical, hands-on experience, work with experienced professionals in Ghana and Canada, expand your global network, and contribute to a project that is creating lasting impact for women, girls, and communities in Northern Ghana.
The Role The Canadian Volunteer in Knowledge and Learning Management will work alongside the UCARE Field Team in Tamale and partner organizations SEND and NETRIGHT to support advocacy and communications initiatives that advance gender equality and women's rights in Northern Ghana. The Canadian Volunteer will report to the UCARE Project Director & Project Field Manager. The Volunteer will have an international travel expense package.
The specific duties will include: Document UCARE GMF Success Stories- identify, analyse and document for sharing the most impactful stories and experiences of GMFs in combating time poverty of women and adolescent girls and its empowering consequences for them, their families and communities, adhering to Alinea's Communications and Safeguarding policies. Work with the SEND Communications Team to adopt success stories in local languages and pidgin English for dissemination by UCARE partner community radio stations and social media platforms. Prepare audio-visual materials: participate in activities (e.g., quarterly review meetings, monthly/neighbourhood/community sensitizations) or conduct interviews with gender mentors, adolescent boys and girls, fathers and mothers, single parents, persons living with disability and use the findings to prepare audio visual materials showcasing the project impacts and results. Support the development and promotion of the GMF COMMUNITY OF PRATICE web-based knowledge management platform. This will be a space for the UCARE team to exchange experiences and expertise with other agencies implementing the GMF approach to promote gender equality and women's empowerment. Conduct training for the SEND team on videography and photography to enhance the UCARE team capability to account for project outcomes using high-quality pictures and videos.
Required Qualifications : A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in communications, Journalism, International Development, Public Policy, or related field Experience working or volunteering in international development. Strong written and verbal English communication skills Interest and knowledge of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) or Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL), unpaid care work, and community development Interest in gender equality, unpaid care work, and community development Experience with social media, storytelling, or web platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp. Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa or Ghana is an asset
