The salary range for this position is:

  • Recruitment range: $72,242- $79,650 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
  • Performance range: $93,951 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Financial Services department is responsible for managing the university's accounting policies, procedures, and financial reporting. The department is divided into four separate units with Research Accounting being one of them. Research Accounting is responsible for the administration and financial reporting of research accounts at UVIC. This involves over $125 million in revenue from several different funding sources and includes approximately 2,000 fund accounts.

Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET) is a multi-partner research initiative helping small- to-mid-sized communities achieve their unique clean-energy systems goals. . ACET involves integral collaboration with more than 40 partners, including four partner universities (University of British Columbia, Royal Roads University, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and Yukon University), First Nations, and 30+ industry innovators and community-based organizations.

Reporting to the Manager and working within Financial Services in collaboration with the ACET team, this position’s primary responsibility is the production of financial reports, cash flows and varied working papers for research funding agencies (primarily ACET) and the university. Each research grant has unique terms, conditions and reporting requirements which must be accurately analyzed, interpreted, and reported on. This position requires a high level of skill, knowledge and decision-making ability due to the complexity of multi-institutional grants. The Financial Accountant (ACET) organizes internal audit requests for documentation and information, responds to enquiries and provides client support to staff, faculty, departments, and institutions.

Job Requirements

This position requires a professional accounting designation (CPA, CGA) plus one year of professional experience, preferably in a post-secondary environment.

Experience must include:

  • Experience with granting agency policies and reporting requirements

  • An understanding of audit requirements

  • Financial reporting and analysis

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

In addition this position requires:

  • Ability to work under pressure to meet established deadlines and to accommodate changing deadlines

  • A flexible and adaptable approach to work requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and tailor communication style for different audiences and situations
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to apply project management best practices to achieve project goals/tasks on time
  • Proficiency with computer applications (i.e., MS-Office Suite, Adobe Create Suite, content management systems)
  • Advanced experience using MS Excel and other financial reporting tools
  • Knowledge and understanding of university and other research funding environments is an asset
