ISL’s Calgary’s Community Development Team delivers a mix of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects that enhance livability and sustainability across Western Canada. We interface with a wide variety of diverse disciplines Community Planning, Landscape Architecture, Transportation, Water and Buildings internally. Externally, the team manages the relationship with independent developers, clients, architects, municipalities and contractors to ensure all stages of development are managed effectively.

  • Variety of Clients – Our team works with a variety of clients ranging from private developers to municipalities across central and northern Alberta.
  • Interesting Work – Some notable past projects include Eau Claire Plaza Public Realm (Calgary), Mathison Hall (University of Calgary), Shepard Snow Storage Facility (Calgary), Varsity Fire Hall Multi-Use Site (Calgary), Municipal Impound Lot (Calgary), EV Charging Feasibility Study and Implementation Plan (Calgary), Westview Interchange Functional Planning Study (Calgary).

A Little About You

Your cover letter must demonstrate:

  • Your interest in working for ISL Engineering’s Community Development Team.

Your resume should show us:

  • B.Sc./BASc in Civil Engineering and eligible for registration as an EIT with APEGA.
  • Graduation from an engineering program and 1-2 years of experience in design and/or field experience with an ideal focus on land/community development.
  • Familiarity using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Suite, and Bluebeam.
  • Working knowledge of the engineering design processes.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, etc.
  • Experience in the land development industry.

A Little More About the Role

You are experienced in navigating fostering strong working relationships with the numerous partners involved in land development and look forward to joining a multidisciplinary organization. You are anticipatory by nature and often see risk before it happens. At this stage of your career, you are also looking forward to growing with a team and would be excited by the opportunity to mentor junior staff on all things risk mitigation, business development and offer your technical expertise.

Reporting to our Community Development Manager, Garnet Dawes, P.Eng., DBIA, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and technologists responsible for delivery of a range of community development, municipal engineering, planning and infrastructure projects for our private and public sector clients. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing development and municipal engineering designs, including grading, site servicing, stormwater management, surface improvements, utility coordination and related work.
  • Engineering analysis and design including site grading stormwater management, servicing and transportation.
  • Writing memorandums, reports, and/or other engineering documents.
  • Drafting and preparation of engineering drawings or report exhibits using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Supporting or managing development application processes such as City of Calgary DPs or DSSPs.
  • Preparing construction quantity take-offs and cost estimates.
  • Preparing contract documents and specifications, and administering tender processes.
  • Providing contract administration or on-site inspection during the construction season, for projects generally located in Southern Alberta.
  • Processing topographic and legal survey data for the preparation of base plans.
  • Being an avid learner, participating in knowledge-sharing and mentoring with fellow staff, and staying current on industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Leveraging artificial intelligence and innovative technologies to enhance deliverable quality, streamline task organization, and drive continuous improvement in workflows.
  • Practicing and maintaining good quality control and documentation standards on all projects, including self-checking of your own deliverables and engaging with other team members for review of your work.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of our drafting standards and applying those standards.
