Higher Ground Consulting (HGC)is seeking an experiencedIntermediate/Senior Hydrogeologist or Environmental Engineerto join our Environment and Regulatory team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to both field and office-based settings, with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers throughout the lifecycle of projects. The successful applicant will work in a dynamic setting on various projects.
This position will be based inour head office in downtown Calgary, Alberta. Higher Ground Consulting works on a basis of mutual trust and respect with our employees. We want our people to be regularly in the office to foster communication, culture, and efficiency, however we do not mandate specific office time or working schedules. We have a relaxed, flexible and dog-friendly office.

Your Contribution:
Your main responsibilities
- Work closely with project managers and technical staff to plan, organize and execute environmental field programs including groundwater and surface water monitoring, soil sampling, test pitting, borehole drilling, groundwater monitoring well installation and other environmental monitoring programs
- Conduct fieldwork for up to two weeks at a time while adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures
- Demonstrate a strong interest in hydrogeology, environmental monitoring and environmental site assessments, contributing positively to team performance and project delivery
- Collaborate with Indigenous partners and communities, supporting reciprocal knowledge sharing and capacity building
- Receive mentorship and training from senior professionals to support technical and professional development
- Assist with project management and project coordination
- Develop figures, tables and borehole logs to support technical analyses
- Manage, analyze and interpret environmental data
- Preparation of technical reports and presentations
Your Profile:
What makes you unique
- Strong interest in geology, groundwater, surface water, and soils
- Bachelor’s degree in Hydrogeology (Geology), Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Adaptability to a flexible work schedule and willing to travel to project sites as needed including:
- Ability to travel for field shifts up to two weeks
- Willingness to work overtime as required during programs
- Capacity to work productively and safely in diverse weather conditions (e.g. heat, cold, rain, snow)
- Ability to undertake prolonged periods of physical activity and exposure to uneven terrain or other environmental factors
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as Member-in-Training (e.g. Geol.I.T., E.I.T.) with APEGA or another applicable professional regulatory body
- Environmental fieldwork experience including work in remote areas for extended periods
- Experience supervising environmental drilling programs, including soil logging and groundwater well installations
- Experience with soil and groundwater monitoring, hydraulic conductivity testing and the use of associated equipment such as field parameter meters, peristaltic pumps, water level tapes and transducers
- Previous experience working with accredited analytical laboratories, including preparation of analytical schedules, supply orders, chain-of-custody forms, QA/QC procedures and environmental sampling protocols
- Experience operating boats, UTVs and/or Argos
- Proficiency with hydrogeological tools or methods such as AQTESOLV, Mann-Kendall trend analysis and Piper Plots
- Familiarity with Western Canadian surface water and groundwater regulations, guidelines and best practices
- Technical writing experience, including hydrogeological assessments, groundwater monitoring reports and site assessment summaries
- Exposure to Alberta’s Directive 055 and Directive 058 and/or British Columbia’s Saline Fluid Guideline
- Database experience and strong data management skills including comparison of analytical results to applicable regulatory guidelines
- Experience with GIS software, R-script or equivalent tools
- Safety certifications such as First Aid, H2S Alive and/or Ground Disturbance Level II
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Class 5 driver’s licence
