What is the opportunity?
The Director, Credit Provisioning Operations will lead the team responsible for managing the execution of RBC's IFRS 9 and CECL credit provisioning estimates across various business segments, including Capital Markets, Personal Banking, Commercial Banking, Wealth Management, Insurance, and City National.
The Director, Credit Provisioning Operations is responsible for supporting the Senior Director, Credit Provisioning and Analysis in analyzing and communicating RBC's credit provisioning estimates at both consolidated and segment levels, maintaining and developing requisite processes and SOX controls, while ensuring compliance with pertinent policies and standards. This role also involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including business segments, finance teams, and senior management, to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
What will you do?
- Manage RBC’s credit provisioning analysis (both retail and wholesale), reporting (including input to enterprise/segment financial forecast/plan), and communication function under IFRS 9, meeting the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
- Work with the credit provision modeling and methodology teams to understand credit provision results and assumptions, provide subject matter content for ongoing enhancement of the methodologies in use.
- Lead the effort around the analytics in support of the incremental scenario level analysis within the team and conduct adhoc analysis to support credit provisioning decisions.
- Maintain strong communication with functional and business partners for timely identification and escalation of issues affecting credit provisioning results.
- Provide business and risk subject matter content and analysis for communication on credit impairment issues and information.
- Engage appropriate functional and business committees and partners; and enhance credit provisioning analytics to inform portfolio decisioning at enterprise level.
- Ensure requisite processes are maintained and their execution adequately documented, with internal management and / or SOX controls as appropriate.
- Support GRM-Enterprise Risk’s broader mandate in articulating RBC’s risk appetite, setting limits, and carrying out enterprise-wide stress testing, as related to loan portfolio analytics.
- Keep abreast of macroeconomic, regulatory, accounting and other financial industry developments as they relate to RBC's credit provisioning (both wholesale and retail).
- Understand RBC vision, as well as support and reinforce targeted behaviours that contribute to RBC goals.
- Provide focus and clarity in establishing individual goals, driving performance management, and supporting career development.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- Strong banking and risk knowledge (wholesale or retail credit or both), with cross-functional capability Risk and Finance; minimum 8yrs+ work experience.
- Present quantitative materials, concisely and accurately, to business and risk stakeholders.
- Graduate degree preferred in an analytical discipline such as Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, or Economics; or a combination of a quantitative undergraduate degree combined with an MBA, CPA, or other related certification.
- Strong ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, complex concepts in non-technical terms to business segment Finance and senior business segment leaders.
- Demonstrated self-starter who can tailor analysis to required level of precision (i.e. identify 80/20 answers).
- Quick learner with outstanding conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with an ability to lead a team to work towards challenging deadlines and deliver under pressure.
- Works well with cross-functional teams (Risk, Finance), demonstrating strong teamwork, coordination, and people skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain a strong network of internal and external relationships to facilitate credit analysis decisioning.
- A thorough understanding of relevant accounting and regulatory rules and requirements (IFRS 9, Basel) preferred.
Nice-to-have
- Prior experience preferred in stress testing or cross-functional coordination within a risk subject matter expert role.
- Ability to quickly grasp new concepts, especially in the field of risk management and finance/accounting (e.g. CCAR, EWST).
- Ability to tailor analysis to required level of precision.
- Ability to communicate, verbal and in writing, complex concepts to a non-technical audience.
- Strong risk and controls mindset.
