Squall is seeking a managing editor to be responsible for its two real estate publications; RENX and RENXHomes.

Squall is a Canadian B2B news company that has recently expanded to six publications from three – including RENX.ca, RENXHomes.ca, Sustainable Biz Canada, TechNX, FoodNX and PeopleNX and there will be more to follow. Professional journalists, an experienced newsroom team and advanced publishing platform delivers business news daily to thousands of industry professionals in Canada and beyond.
The Opportunity:
- Working remotely with periodic event attendance – primarily in the Greater Toronto Area – this position requires a well-managed daily routine with tight deadlines on business days. Applicants are expected to have excellent news judgment and demonstrable strength in copy-editing, plus a proven ability to initiate stories and enterprise features.
- Experience working with news teams and freelance reporters is a requirement of this position. Ideally the successful candidate would also bring extendable relationships with other business journalists relevant to Squall’s growth plans.
- Candidates must be familiar with emerging digital trends and opportunities, and know how to leverage social media and digital platforms to break news and reach audiences. They must understand the complexities and nuances of filing stories for multiple platforms on time on deadline. A keen interest in finding new ways to deliver compelling business news is a requirement.
- Experience as a business news editor is essential and experience covering the commercial and residential real estate sectors or related fields would be ideal.
- There is the opportunity for advancement at Squall as it expands its editorial platforms.
Qualifications
The following responsibilities apply to Squall publications.
- Write stories for daily and breaking news;
- Manage Squall freelance writers;
- Assign stories according to weekly budget;
- Organize content and writer’s schedules;
- Manage featured external columnists;
- Headline writing, article posting, website content organization;
- Source images and add to posts as required;
- Participate in daily / weekly newsletter preparation;
- Determine the weekly editorial plan;
- Post to Squall Inc. social media accounts;
- Work with Social Media Co-ordinator to grow Squall Inc. social media presence;
- Assist to onboard new editors and reporters;
- Other tasks as assigned or agreed to during the course of the contract.
Qualifications

A journalism or other related university degree;

At least 10 years of experience in a fast-paced and evolving media environment;

Exceptional English language writing skills and news judgment;

A track record of exceptional newsroom management;

Canadian citizenship.
