What you’ll do

Successful candidates will be assigned to either a Projects-focused role or a Regional-focused role. While there is overlap in technical expectations, the day-to-day responsibilities differ as outlined below.

The Distribution Engineering team serves communities across British Columbia from offices in Burnaby (Edmonds), Victoria, and Vernon. Our work spans customer connections, system reinforcement, capital projects, and electrification initiatives supporting climate action and economic growth.

This posting is intended to support both Distribution Engineering – Projects and Distribution Engineering – Regional roles under a single intake, working from the Burnaby location. Candidates will be considered for assignment based on organizational needs, and individual background and experience.


Distribution Engineering – Projects:

Engineers in Projects-focused roles support capital programs and major distribution projects, providing technical leadership from project definition through construction and commissioning.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing professional engineering expertise for capital system improvements and major distribution projects supplying residential, commercial, and industrial load.

  • Delivering and assuring engineering outcomes by either taking direct accountability as Professional of Record or by fulfilling the Owner’s Engineer role, reviewing and accepting consultant designs to ensure compliance with BC Hydro standards, safety requirements, and accepted engineering practice.

  • Establishing design strategies, validating scope, and identifying technical risks and mitigation approaches for complex projects.

  • Performing detailed engineering studies such as load flow, voltage stability, fault current, feeder cable pulling analysis, feeder ampacity studies, overhead pole line designs, power quality, and protection coordination.

  • Supporting procurement, construction, and commissioning activities through technical reviews, field support, and issue resolution.

  • Collaborating closely with Project Managers, Construction, Planning, Operations, and external stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, constructible, and cost-effective solutions.

  • Providing technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to project engineers, designers, technologists, and technical support staff.


Distribution Engineering – Regional:

Engineers in Regional-focused roles provide ongoing engineering support for the operation, maintenance, renewal, and expansion of the distribution system within an assigned geographic area.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting regional distribution systems through engineering studies, investigations, and system assessments related to load growth, customer connections, reliability, and safety.

  • Delivering and assuring engineering outcomes by either taking direct accountability as Professional of Record or by fulfilling the Owner’s Engineer role, reviewing and accepting consultant designs to ensure compliance with BC Hydro standards, safety requirements, and accepted engineering practice.

  • Providing engineering expertise for system reinforcement, replacement, and expansion of overhead and underground distribution infrastructure up to and including 35 kV.

  • Performing detailed engineering studies such as load flow, voltage stability, fault current, feeder cable pulling analysis, feeder ampacity studies, overhead pole line designs, power quality, and protection coordination.

  • Supporting Distribution Planning through recommending and implementing system improvements as part of customer connections.

  • Supporting Operations and Asset Planning activities through technical analysis, field investigations, and engineering judgement.

  • Working closely with regional stakeholders, operations crews, designers, and planners to balance safety, reliability, constructability, environmental impact, and lifecycle cost.

  • Mentoring and guiding junior engineers and technical staff while supporting continuous improvement of engineering standards and practices.

What you bring

  • Graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized or accredited university. Other engineering disciplines may be considered with relevant experience.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC), or eligibility for immediate registration. Equivalent professional registration with other Canadian or international jurisdictions will also be considered.

  • Relevant engineering experience. Typically, 8+ years for Senior Engineer roles; 4+ years for an Intermediate Engineer role. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered for Junior roles including engineers in training (EIT).

  • Strong technical knowledge of overhead and underground distribution systems operating at voltages up to and including 35 kV.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound engineering judgement, analytical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to a wide range of audiences.

  • Proven leadership, teamwork, relationship management, and interpersonal skills.

  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing and willingness to travel as required.

  • Applicants who do not meet the full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a lower-level position. Candidates at the Senior (P3) level will be considered and hired at that level if no qualified Specialist (P4) candidates are found.

  • This role has been posted as a senior engineer and candidates with less or more experience may be considered for an appropriate role.

  • Candidates must be willing to travel.

  • A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain a Driver's License: Class 5 In Good Standing.

  • Applicants will be assessed based on: educational qualifications, standing with EGBC, experience (years, relevancy and quality), as well as their core competencies.

  • Internationally trained engineers may be considered if eligible for EGBC registration.

  • LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) may be considered for applicants who are eligible for either their P.Eng or EIT registration with EGBC.

  • Roles based at BC Hydro's Edmonds campus in Burnaby, BC in a 'hybrid' role, requiring in office work 2 to 3 days/ week.
