The City of Orillia is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Park/Facility Operator for the shift of 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Thursday to Sunday at the West Orillia Sports Complex.

Reporting to the Supervisor Ice Facility Operations, this position will work with a team of Park/Facility Operators to ensure the safe operation of recreation facilities and parks. They are responsible for all aspects of recreation facility operators, including pool operations, arena ice operations, curling ice operations, building maintenance and cleanliness as well as rental permit set up and clean up. Within the parks system, this role will assist with the maintenance of turf, sports fields, splash pads and other park amenities.

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, hold a certification in Basic Refrigeration or a Certified Ice Technician (CIT), and have previous experience in park and facility operations. A valid ‘G’ Ontario drivers license with acceptable driver’s abstract is required.

Park/Facility Operator

Position Synopsis and Purpose

Reporting to the Supervisor of Ice Surfaces, this position will work with a team of Park/Facility Operators to ensure the safe operation of recreation facilities and parks. They are responsible for all aspects of recreation facility operators, including pool operations, arena ice operations, curling ice operations, building maintenance and cleanliness as well as rental permit set up and clean up. Within the parks system, this role will assist with the maintenance of turf, sports fields, splash pads and other park amenities.

Park and Facility Operations

  • This position is accountable the safe operation of the facility as well as the safety of all other workers and the public.
  • Responsible for all aspects of recreation facility operations, which includes but is not limited to pool operations, arena ice operations, curling ice operations, building maintenance and cleanliness, permit set-up/clean-up.
  • Perform maintenance functions, caretaking and other facility operational duties to ensure the safe operation of parks and recreation facilities.
  • Responsible for the assembly and disassembly of equipment for various park activities and recreation usages.
  • Maintain facility buildings, keeping windows, walls, entrances, windows and change rooms clean. General repairs and painting as needed.
  • Maintain turf, sport field and Splash Pad maintenance including lawn mowing, trimming, watering, cleaning, and picking up litter at the City’s parks and facilities.
  • Responsible for horticulture maintenance, planting and preparing flower beds and watering on a daily basis as well as tree trimming.
  • Compliance with required standards and regulations established by the City, Ministry of Labour, Ontario Fire Code, Technical Standards and Safety Authority, B-52 Mechanical Refrigeration Code, Operating
  • Engineers Regulation, Ontario Health Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act and all applicable provincial and federal regulations.

  • Communicate with the public and user groups in a courteous and efficient manner to promote a high standard of customer service.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints.

  • Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

Minimum Qualifications

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must possess either a valid Basic Refrigeration certificate and/or Certified Pool Operator certificate.

Experience

  • Previous experience as a facility operator.
  • Experience operating equipment such as floor scrubbers, trucks, mowers, ice resurfacer, etc.
  • Experience operating power tools and hand tools.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability

  • Superior written and oral communications skills, including the ability to research, gather and interpret technical information to create an end product that can be understood by a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of independence with excellent organizational and time management skills to handle competing priorities.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and team skills to lead and/or participate on multi-disciplinary teams and cross-functional activities and projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of print, graphic, social media and other web-related mediums.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize relevant software applications and various desktop publishing platforms.
  • Excellent judgement, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent time management and ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Advanced computer skills using SharePoint, MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, and the Internet.
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing using Adobe Creative Suite and web content management or HTML.
  • Familiarity with Emergency Control protocols and crisis response procedures.
  • Techniques for handling public inquiries and managing challenging situations in a professional manner.

Physical Demands

  • Physical demand requires sitting, standing or walking. Work activities will require a level of strength, physical fitness and flexibility.
  • May be required to work in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Appropriate protective equipment must be worn when working with or around hazardous chemicals and/or equipment.
