CAMH is Canada’s largest academic health sciences centre dedicated to mental health and addiction. The Geriatric Mental Health Services (GMHS) is dedicated to the provision of specialized, interprofessional assessment, treatment, consultation, and follow-up services to older persons with mental illness and addiction. GMHS has a strong research focus component, aiming primarily to enhance understanding of the variability of treatment responses in older persons, conducting research involving brain imaging, genetics, digital interventions and cognitive remediation. Enabling tailored approaches to care for this population with medication and other treatments. Such approaches can then enhance treatment efficacy and reduce adverse experiences in the care of late life mental health disorders.

Reporting to the Research Operations Manager, the Geriatric Mental Health Services is currently seeking a full-time, contract (1 year) Research Lab Manager to support on-going research activities, with a focus on a large multi-center research project. The manager will oversee the research project, including:

  • Work collaboratively with the PI/Project Lead, Research Finance, and the management team to provide effective and timely oversight of the PI’s finances, compliance with regulatory and ethical guidelines for research.
  • Oversee the pre/post award requirements for the PI’s projects, including RAAF submissions and grant activity set up
  • Prepare and submit financial reports
  • Be aware of and oversee PI’s project compliance with all institutional and Research-specific policies and procedures.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the PI’s research lab, including budget management and procurement of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Oversee / lead the PI’s research staff and trainees as applicable
  • Coordinate the maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, ensuring that all instruments are in proper working condition for accurate research outcomes.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate repairs to minimize disruptions to research activities.
  • Support and participate in risk management, patient safety, and quality improvement activities departmentally and organization-wide.
  • Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity and is free of harassment and discrimination
  • Models the principles and values of integrity, competence, responsibility, respect and trust
  • Performs cross functional and other duties as assigned and/or requested

This position is located at 1025 Queen Street West, with travel between sites, as necessary.

Job Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree an applicable science or health sciences academic discipline.
  • Previous training in laboratory management, research methodologies, and data analysis is essential.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a research or laboratory setting, with progressive responsibilities, is typically required. Preferred 3 years’ experience, with demonstrated increasing leadership responsibility.
  • Previous experience in managing a research lab, overseeing research projects, and supervising research staff is highly valuable.
  • Familiarity with mental health research and knowledge of relevant regulations and compliance standards is beneficial.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills to effectively manage personnel and resources.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in data management and analysis tools, as well as a strong understanding of research ethics and regulatory compliance.
  • Grant accounting and reporting
  • Strong analytical, organizational, conceptual and decision-making skills
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
