Lead Skilled Labourer
Regular Full-Time ($36.71/hour – 2024 Rates) Pay Grade 8

Ready to shape the future of Oak Bay? As a Lead Skilled Labourer, you’ll play a critical role in maintaining and improving the District’s essential infrastructure. From overseeing complex projects to mentoring the next generation of skilled workers, this role offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact.
The Lead Skilled Labourer performs skilled and technical manual work in the construction and maintenance of all nature of municipal infrastructure, including sewers, drains and waterworks. The incumbent is relied on as the senior skilled technician for guidance, instruction, and training in manual on- site construction work. The physical component of this position is very similar to that of the Skilled Labourer, Public Works. In addition, this work requires the employee to exercise considerable independent judgment, by the assumption of a second-in-command role relative to a more senior foreman.
Our ideal candidate has extensive related experience, including wide ranging exposure to complex Public Works methods, equipment, infrastructure and services, with a demonstrated aptitude for a leadership role in the performance of public works construction and maintenance work. Additional requirements include a minimum of three years in a Public Works construction environment, completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, courses in plan reading and underground utility locating, National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) certification or an approved equivalent, Water Distribution Level II Certification, Wastewater Collection Level I Certification, and a valid and subsisting BC Driver’s License. This position is represented by CUPE Local 374.
In order to be considered for the Lead Skilled Labourer position, a candidate should possess all the required qualifications. Internal candidates who do not have all required qualifications will only be considered if there are no other qualified applicants, and they are actively pursuing achieving the required qualifications. If a candidate is registered to write an exam to obtain a qualification, they are asked to indicate in their cover letter when the exam will take place.
