Position Description
Responsibilities:
Provides technical, planning and operational expertise related to Cloud and Hybrid Cloud provisioned services.
Cloud and Automation Services
- Designs, implements, and manages Cloud tools for the planning, trending, monitoring usage and alarming of services hosted in the Cloud and hybrid Cloud environments.
- Accesses, validates and recommends Cloud Platform service requests.
- Integrates Cloud services into existing and new architecture designs to aid in system optimization, data protection and Disaster Recovery.
- Adopts, incorporates and integrates the use of various Public and Private Cloud platforms.
- Codes and/or scripts accurate solutions consistent with requirements.
- Creates and maintains thorough documentation (configurations, installation tasks, design specifications, maintenance processes and scheduled tasks) for IaaS components, standards, and tasks.
- Coordinates and collaborates with various technology and non-technology Subject Matter Experts to ensure security, availability, reliability, and scalability of Cloud services.
- Works with application owners to ensure applications and systems are managed according to their respective platform lifecycle.
- Initiates, plans, and coordinates activity schedules for major Cloud or Hybrid Cloud upgrades and changes.
- Performs tasks necessary to fulfil operation and service level agreements with stakeholders regarding the consumption and utilization of Cloud based resources.
- Identifies manual processes and strategically automates them with the goal of improving system reliability.
- Escalates Cloud service issues and incidents to Cloud Service Providers to ensure the incidents are resolved in a timely manner.
Networking Services
- Installs and configures Internet Gateway Services (IGS) and other data communication equipment in Cloud and hybrid Cloud environments.
- Deploys system wide access control list updates and firmware updates on networking devices.
- Reviews, analyzes and reports on network performance, standards, trends and screens for potential problems or performance degradation.
- Configures and maintains internet routing protocols and oversees Internet peering connections.
- Performs and documents wireless site surveys.
- Coordinates network device installations with schools, departments, and external Service Providers.
- Works collaboratively on complex problems, root cause analyses, corrective actions, and proactive practises to improve efficiencies or increase cost-effectiveness.
- Rectifies LAN, WAN, Internet and other enterprise networking infrastructures problems.
Server and Storage Services
- Plans, configures and builds virtual machines, guest operating systems, hypervisors, storage systems, systems management suites, and environmental monitoring systems within Cloud and hybrid Cloud environments.
- Performs administrator functions for/on systems, applications, and appliances.
- Maintains and enhances corporate directory services and environments along with associated federated and integrated Cloud services.
- Performs standard configuration, management, and maintenance tasks for server and storage related components of Cloud and hybrid Cloud infrastructure. Utilizes automated workflows and scripting for deploying, configuring and managing server and storage related components.
- Ensures backup and recovery for server and storage components consistent with stakeholder requirements.
- Ensures compliance of the server and storage related infrastructure with industry security best practices.
- Monitors systems performance, health, alerts, and takes appropriate preventative and corrective actions.
IT Security Services
- Monitors Cloud platforms, networks, systems and data for security breaches, intrusions, or Indicators of Compromise (IOC).
- Remediates and documents security concerns that arise from all services hosted in the Private or Public Clouds.
- Conducts accurate and timely audits, risk, and vulnerability assessments.
- Conducts complex and sensitive security investigations using digital forensics tools.
- Creates, maintains and documents policy and rule-sets for security related systems and technology including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, VPNs, cryptographic systems, unified threat management platforms.
- Reports on key IT security findings and/or recommendations to the ITS senior leadership team.
- Manages and operates Security Information and Event Management services.
- Conducts analyses of systems, security logs, and datasets to identify errors, inconsistencies, anomalies, patterns, deviations, intrusions, inappropriate activity or other Indicators of Compromise (IOC).
- Oversees and makes recommendations regarding web and content filtering rules and bandwidth policies.
- Manages end user device security technologies that protect against malware and viruses.
- Recommends course of action and work priorities for patching and other activities based on Security Alert Bulletin recommendations.
- Ensures that information security components are performing optimally.
- Conducts research to assist with identifying Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) and advisory threats.
- Develops Security Awareness and training programs.
Architects, develops and implements Cloud and On-premises based solutions, integrations and automations
Cloud and Automation Services
- Leads the architecting, designing, planning, installation and configuring of Cloud and hybrid Cloud solutions.
- Designs, develops, and tests automations and framework for automation as catalysts for the automation of manual technical workflows and processes.
- Conducts troubleshooting, maintenance, and support activities in Cloud and Hybrid Cloud environment.
- Architects, designs, develops, tests, and implements system integrations and interfaces.
- Assists system architects, system analysts, and other staff and stakeholders with deploying and/or migrating applications or infrastructure services.
- Researches and stays current on Cloud (public, private and hybrid) architectures, frameworks, and developments.
- Initiates, plans, and coordinates schedules of activities related to major infrastructure upgrades, and changes.
Networking Services
- Architects and designs all network infrastructure components.
- Designs, configures and manages network load balancers to optimize client network application traffic and user experience.
- Oversees the evaluation and testing of network infrastructure in a lab/testing environments to ensure compatibility/interoperability or to identify and isolate faulty equipment or other problems.
- Understands connectivity requirements, capabilities, capacity and configurations of various devices.
- Develops and recommends solutions for medium to large-scale environments.
Server and Storage Services
- Architects, designs, validates and builds server and storage solutions consistent with short to medium term needs and Disaster Recovery requirements.
- Utilizes capacity and trending data to optimize how new server and storage services are architected and designed.
- Contributes to the architecture and designs of flexible server and storage services that can be appropriately scaled-up for peak and lower demand periods.
- Utilizes and manages enterprise system management tools.
- Utilizes Cloud management toolsets to collect analytics and trending data related to Server and Storage solutions.
IT Security Services
- Researches, reviews, assesses and recommends Cloud based solutions based on security requirements and best practices.
- Researches and maintains currency on information security, information security architectures, best practices, and issues.
- Architects, designs, validates and builds information security components and solutions.
- Assists system architects, system analysts, and other staff and stakeholders specifying and selecting Information Security components and solutions.
- Assists in developing security technology roadmaps.
- Creates and maintains thorough documentation of information security components, systems, and standards.
Provides other IT support
- Leads and participates as a member on Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) tasked with resolving major system or technology issues and/or security breaches.
- Leads and/or coordinates recovery exercises related to developing, testing and improving recovery procedures.
- Liaises with law enforcement and/or security agencies on IT Security matters and/or security investigations when authorized.
- Contributes to the development of strategic Information Technology plans.
- Coordinates work and provides guidance on medium to large sized project teams for technology initiatives.
- Works closely with the IT Help Desk to establish processes for ongoing end user support and incident/problem resolution.
- Conducts IT related cost analyses, and creates and maintains executive level dashboards and/or reports.
- Follows change control, and testing processes to effect modifications to applications and systems.
- Participates in the work of advisory committees.
- Guides, mentors and oversees the work tasks of junior information technology staff.
- Develops and maintains relationships and contacts with technology vendors,
partners, and external agencies. - Prepares and delivers presentations.
- Performs other related responsibilities as assigned to meet the purpose and accountabilities of the role.
- May be required to participate in a 7x24 on-call rotation based on a predetermined schedule.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- A 4 year post-secondary degree in Computer Science (or equivalent degree in Information Technology); and
- Minimum of 5 years of working experience in an advanced level technical position that involved architecting, designing, building, or supporting Server, Storage, Network, Security or Cloud technologies.
- Up to date certification in at least two (2) IT domain areas preferred:
- Networking
- Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) in Cloud or Datacenter or
Security or Wireless or Routing and Switching.
OR - Juniper Networks Certified Enterprise Routing and Switching Expert
(JNCIE – ENT)
- Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) in Cloud or Datacenter or
- Server and Storage
- VMware Certified Professional and/or a VMware Certified Advanced
Professional.
OR - Red Hat Certified Engineer.
OR - Microsoft Certified Solution Expert in Cloud/Azure and/or Core
Infrastructure.
- VMware Certified Professional and/or a VMware Certified Advanced

- CISSP Security certification.
OR - GIAC SANS (Advanced Level) Security certification.

- Networking
- Computer programming experience with languages including C/C++, ASP.NET, Java, PHP, Python, Bash, Pearl and Ruby.
- Solid knowledge of Active Directory and Active Directory Federation Services and/or
Azure Active Directory. - Advanced knowledge and experience working on traditional server infrastructure from HP, Dell, Cisco, Lenovo and/or Hyper-converged Infrastructure stack(s).
- Advanced experience supporting server virtualization technologies such as VMWare or Hyper-V.
- Experience supporting Fibre Channel and iSCSI SAN/NAS/DAS deployments in a Data Centre environment.
- Strong experience with Microsoft Windows PowerShell scripting.
- Advanced knowledge of network protocols including DNS, DHCP, NTP and TCP/IP.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure Cloud Services, Amazon AWS and/or Google Cloud Platform would be an asset.
- ITIL certifications and/or COBIT certification desirable.
- An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience may be considered.
