Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

This role is focused on individual cases helping clients find solutions to problems of social adjustment that are difficult for individuals to navigate on their own, assisting in establishing goals, monitoring progress, and preparing discharge and other plans. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.

Accountabilities:

The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar duties to the listed below:

  • Provides supervision and support for clients/residents as required by The Salvation Army and funding contract policies and procedures.
  • Builds relationships with clients of The Salvation Army Stevenson House Emergency Shelter and, in conjunction with the Caseworkers, and outreach workers provide case planning for clients.
  • Accurately records up to date information for case planning purposes using appropriate methods; maintains BC Housing database HIFIS, logbooks, progress notes and completes incident reports.
  • Engages with unsheltered homeless individuals and those at risk for homelessness and provide supports which will help stabilize their life.
  • Assess client’s needs and provide ongoing support, advocacy, and follow-up.
  • Assist individuals to locate rental housing and ensure that applications are complete.
  • Encourages and supports clients in developing new skills and making positive lifestyle changes.
  • Provide direct or referrals to life skills training, personal health, hygiene, household management, financial management, crisis intervention and problem solving, and follow-up with each individual.
  • Monitors client’s progress towards goals and objectives through motivation and mentorship.
  • Performs client intakes and prepares discharge plans for shelter clients.
  • Provide follow-up supports to ensure individuals have successfully transitioned to housing and receive related health and social services programs and services.
  • Assists with daily operations, providing support and security at Stevenson House.
  • Accompany clients to appointments and off-site services to clients (i.e. medical, income assistance, legal, housing search).
  • Provide VAT interviews to clients.
  • Collaboration and coordination of services with appropriate community agencies.
  • Assist clients in the replacement of their lost or stolen identification.
  • Maintains accurate client files, reports and statistical records.

Performs other duties as assigned.

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to bodily fluids and bodily waste
  • Sharp objects

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Financial: The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters. They may be authorized to collect rent and distribute damage deposits, and may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash.

Working Conditions:

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a shelter and/or in treatment facilities.
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people
  • Abusive people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Isolation
  • Work schedule affecting lifestyle
  • Exposure to drugs and alcohol

Education, Experience, AND Qualifications:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OHAS Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • High School Completion
  • Social services Diploma or related Diploma or Degree
  • High proficiency in Microsoft office, Excel, Windows, Email, Housing Searches, Online applications

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Minimum one year Experience in frontline social service work

Skills and Capabilities:

  • The performance of the job requires keyboarding/Manual record keeping, and lifting/packing clients/residents property/personal effects and engaging in recreational activities.
  • The performance of the job requires attentive listening and observation of body language, continuously monitoring the environment, multitasking and reading. Ability to work in a fast paced environment, to meet deadlines and cope with stressful situations.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40lbs

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $26.75 to $26.75 with a maximum of $26.75.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
