Position Overview:

The Engineering Technician will provide hands-on support of mechanical and electrical equipment, as well as diagnostic systems currently in use or under development. The technician will be part of a team that builds and maintains an assortment of complex and unique equipment, machinery, and testing apparatus. The position is primarily located on site at General Fusion’s facilities in Richmond, BC, and may require some shift work or flexible hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, operate, and troubleshoot mechanical, electro-mechanical, and pneumatic systems.

  • Provide input and suggestions for design and assembly procedures.

  • Maintain shop, shop tools, and materials.

  • Specify and order shop tools and supplies as needed.

  • Design and construct experimental research equipment using varied materials including: lumber, steel, plastic, aluminum stock and extrusions. Specify and order parts and materials for these projects.

  • Work while keeping personal and co-worker safety as the top priority in all operations. Champion safe work practices.

  • Maintain a clean, tidy, and efficient workspace.

  • Prepare documentation, present results at team meetings.

  • Proactively contribute to a great work environment.

  • Bring experience and shop know-how to the team.

  • Other task as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Engineering Physics, or related field.

  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience working in a shop or lab environment and/or working hands-on with mechanical equipment (relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.)

  • Complete knowledge and full understanding of area of specialization, principles, and practices within a professional discipline. Assesses unusual circumstances and uses sophisticated analytical and problem-solving techniques to identify cause. Resolves and assesses a wide range of issues in creative ways and suggests variations in approach. This job is the fully qualified, experienced professional, journey-level position.

  • Enhances relationships and networks with senior internal/external partners who are not familiar with the subject matter often requiring persuasion. Adapts style to differing audiences and often advises others on difficult matters.

  • Experience and comfort working in a fast-paced research and development environment.

  • Strong multi-disciplinary skillset with demonstrated experience in diagnosing, repairing, and solving system/equipment challenges.

  • Hands on experience working with a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment in a research or product development lab environment.

  • Meticulous and detail-oriented approach.

  • Excellent time management skills

  • Ability to lift to 20kg.

  • Basic Computer Literacy (Excel, Outlook)

  • Demonstrated skills including the following preferred:

    • Steel Fabrication
    • Mig Welding
    • Gas brazing
    • Plasma Cutting
    • Lathe and Mill operation
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks) an asset.

  • Familiarity with 3D printing (SLA or FDM) an asset.

  • Forklift experience or certification an asset.

  • Experience with hoisting, rigging and operating overhead cranes preferred.

This role requires self-directed work that is often driven by employee initiative. The successful candidate will have the expertise to focus their attention on tasks that add value to the project at hand. The candidate must have experience in working with and safely moving large equipment.

The typical hiring range for this position is $84,000 - $100,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
