About the role

As a Senior Measurement and Sampling Technician, you will train junior technicians on proper sampling processes and ensure accurate measurement of all products produced at our Saint John, NB refinery. Your goal will be to maintain high standards of product quality and quantity while supporting operational efficiency and safety. Your success will depend on your ability to work safely in all weather conditions, provide coverage during rotating shifts, climb up to 70’, board marine vessels when required, and apply your mechanical aptitude and math skills to deliver precise results.

Your Responsibilities

  • Collect samples according to all safety protocols and collection standards, and train junior technicians to do the same
  • Measure and obtain temperatures of various hydrocarbon products according to all standards, and train junior technicians to do the same
  • Perform calculations from measurement data to generate quantity reports to all standards, and train junior technicians to do the same
  • Assist more experienced loss control specialists as required. Tasks include confirming inspection reports from Inspection service providers, challenging incorrect measurements, reviewing contracts for sound measurement practices, and rotating on an “on call phone” rotation every 4th week
  • Assist Loss Control Manager in mentoring junior technicians.
  • Monitor third party contractors as they perform various functions; ensure work is being completed to Irving Oil and industry standards
  • Ensure Junior Measurement and Sampling technicians have all equipment necessary to succeed in performing their daily activities
  • Ensure all measurement and sampling equipment meet API/MPMS standards and are documented as such
  • Have expert knowledge in API/MPMS, ASTM standards, and interpreting, and implementing these standards in daily scenarios

Your Skills

  • Ability to think, solve problems, and troubleshoot issues
  • Comfortable learning new software systems. Good computer skills: solid knowledge of Excel (e.g., updating spreadsheets, verifying formulas, cross reference data)
  • Able to cover rotating 12-hour shifts days, outdoors in the plant, year-round in all types of weather to provide vacation coverage for junior technicians
  • Able to bend, stoop, crawl, lift up to 40lbs, enter confined spaces, climb up to 70’
  • Must be able to use SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) safely
  • Able to review sales contracts and General Terms and Conditions and recommend sound measurement and sampling practices
  • Comfortable teaching Safety, Measurement, Sampling, and calculations to junior technicians
  • Strong math skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Your Experience

  • Minimum 5 – 10 years in Hydrocarbon Loss Control, or Petroleum Inspection service provider supervisory or Management experience
  • Minimum high school education. A background in Trades, Process Controls, Terminal Operations, Industrial Controls, or Engineering Technology is an asset (but not required)
  • Mechanical background and aptitude
  • A minimum Class 5 Driver’s License is required
