Opportunity

MacEwan University is seeking a UX/UI Designer for a 12-month full-time non-recurring term opportunity in the Web and Portal Services department.

Reporting to the Manager, Web Services, the UX/UI Designer leads the building and optimization of the School of Continuing Education’s website in Modern Campus and Cascade CMS from planning through launch. Combining strategy, UX, research, and front-end design, the role delivers a responsive, accessible, and user-centered platform. Using HTML, CSS, and modern web standards, you will develop structures, templates, and guidelines, ensure alignment with MacEwan’s standards, and will drive continuous improvement through analytics and testing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing sustainable, site-wide content strategies, aligning with institutional and business objectives and user needs;
  • Developing and leading projects supporting long-term website planning, goals, and strategic initiatives
  • Designing and refining user journeys from course discovery to enrollment, creating journey maps, personas, and experience blueprints to inform digital product and content development;
  • Leading the design, development, review, and approve intuitive, responsive, and accessible user interfaces and web pages for the SCE website in Modern Campus, using HTML, CSS, and modern front-end technologies (including JavaScript and Bootstrap 4 when needed), ensuring compatibility across devices and browsers & high quality user experience;
  • Creating mockups for SCE templates and pages following MacEwan and SCE brand guidelines;
  • Ensuring website structure and content aligns with institutional strategic direction, accessibility standards, and branding guidelines;
  • Designing, developing, and conducting user testing of web content strategies, site structures, and designs using quantitative and qualitative research methods;
  • Translating user research and analytics insights into actionable content and UX solutions;
  • Providing expert advice, direction and support regarding effective digital and content marketing best practices, platforms and processes, including Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & user experience principles; and
  • Providing solutions and advice to SCE marketing team based on established processes and industry standards.

SKILLS

You will have:

  • A strong understanding of digital behaviour and the ability to apply insights to enhance digital experiences;
  • Knowledge and understanding of UX principles and web accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, W3C) and best practices for inclusive design;
  • Familiarity with user research methodologies, including interviews, surveys, and usability testing;
  • Visual design: Strong understanding of layout, typography, color theory, and composition;
  • Responsive design: Creating layouts that adapt across screen sizes and devices;
  • Design tools: Proficiency with software like Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite;
  • HTML & CSS: Knowing how content is structured and styled in code;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts like SEO to non-technical audiences;
  • Strong project management and organizational skills;
  • Strategic thinking, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with strong attention to detail;
  • The ability to analyze data and translate insights into actionable strategies to support informed decision-making and planning;
  • Strong relationship-building and consultation skills, with a commitment to customer service and professionalism;
  • The ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships while collaborating with employees at all levels of the organization;
  • The ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively, and negotiate conflicting timelines in a fast-paced environment;
  • The ability to work collaboratively with minimal supervision in a team environment;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Understanding of academic culture, university policies and procedures, and organizational structures;
  • Proficiency in analytics, SEO management, CRM platforms, and the Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams);
  • Javascript and bootstrap 4 would be considered an asset; and
  • Proficiency in project management tools like Asana would be considered an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Communication Design, Digital Marketing, Interaction Design, Digital Experience Design or a related field.
  • A minimum 5 years of experience in web content strategy, inclusive of information architecture, data-driven strategies, taxonomy, and governance.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in web design or a related field (e.g., digital design, UI/UX design, front-end development).
  • A portfolio showing real-world projects with responsive design, user-focused layouts, and attention to visual detail.
  • Experience working with content management and customer relationship management systems.
  • Experience conducting end-user testing, content audits, and developing content governance frameworks.
  • Experience creating, implementing, and maintaining content standards for a complex organization.
  • Experience in creating wireframes, storyboards, process and user flows, and site maps.
  • Experience working with teams on large-scale, long-term projects.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment would be considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
