Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Manager, Health Information Management, Privacy, Access & Risk is currently seeking a Temporary Full Time Health Information Management (HIM) Professional. The purpose of the position is to provide expertise in health information management, data quality and standardization, release of information, auditing, clinical coding & classification, and retention. The successful candidate must understand how data is transformed into usable information and advocate for data-driven decision- making. The HIM Professional is a critical element in enhancing the quality of health information and maintaining record integrity

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Incorporate Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) principles into all initiatives and key responsibilities.
  • Ensures the electronic health records are accurate, complete and up-to-date. Undertake regular and systematic audits of electronic documentation, clinical coding, and diagnostic information. Review scanned documents for quality and accuracy.
  • Validate the request for and execute appropriate access and disclosure of personal health information in accordance with Waypoint policies, departmental procedures, and applicable legislation including the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), the Mental Health Act (MHA), the Public Hospitals Act (PHA), and the Health Care Consent Act (HCCA).
  • Code and abstract health data using relevant classification systems and / or nomenclatures. Audit, prepare, and submit abstracts and assessments within required deadlines.
  • Provides expertise on the lifecycle of health information, including how information is protected, exchanged, preserved, retained, and disposed of.
  • Support departments and clinical programs on topics related to enterprise-wide information management including the importance of accurate collection, appropriate use, and authorized disclosure of personal health information, and Waypoint’s role as a Health Information Custodian.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of Health Information Management (HIM) Diploma or Degree Program Required
  • Certification in good standing with the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM) and an active professional membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA); maintained annually Required
  • In depth comprehension of health information management practices, including the health information lifecycle
  • Knowledge of legislative requirements, standards and guidelines including but not limited to the PHIPA, the MHA, the PHA, the HCCA, and the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC)
  • Experience in clinical coding using the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10), the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI), and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5)
  • Ability to audit, validate, and analyze data ensuring the health information contained within the record is accurate, complete, reliable and relevant.
  • Familiarity with Meditech, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe, and other common business software platforms
  • Resourcefulness with a results-oriented work ethic to work independently and consistently deliver quality, relevant and timely results
  • Ability to think critically and maintain extensive attention to detail
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills in order to motivate, influence, and educate all levels of Waypoint staff to the importance of health information and data management practices
  • Organizational skills to manage and prioritize multiple tasks to meet required deadlines
  • Exceptional customer service skills to anticipate and be responsive to customer needs with enthusiasm
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively prepare, present, and discuss information throughout all levels of the organization and externally
