THE POSITION The Trade Compliance Specialis t ensures that SMG’s import and export activities fully comply with Canadian, U.S., and international trade regulations. This role requires deep expertise in product classification, documentation, and customs procedures. The Specialist partners with internal teams, brokers, and regulatory authorities to prevent compliance risks, avoid costly delays, and identify duty savings opportunities. By providing timely guidance and maintaining accurate records, the Specialist plays a critical role in supporting SMG’s operational efficiency and growth.
HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING AN IMPACT
- Prepare, review, and manage import/export documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Classify products using Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes and audit current classifications to ensure accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with federal and international customs and trade regulations.
- Monitor regulatory changes and provide proactive guidance on their impact to internal teams.
- Support Finance in determining appropriate duties and recovering costs where applicable.
- Review brokerage invoices for accuracy and resolve disputes.
- Maintain detailed compliance records to support audits and regulatory reviews.
- Build strong working relationships with customs brokers and regulatory authorities.

- Zero compliance violations and successful regulatory audits.
- On-time, disruption-free imports and exports with minimal shipment delays.
- Cost savings achieved through accurate classification and duty recovery.
- Proactive risk management and clear communication on regulatory changes.
- Recognized as a trusted subject matter expert for customs and trade compliance within SMG.
WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU REQUIRE
- 5+ years of experience with customs regulations and import/export procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of international trade agreements, tariffs, and compliance requirements.
- Proficiency with HTS product classification.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment is an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
