Equipment Operator 2 - Continuing
About the role
**SUMMARY: **
Reports to the Manager, Maintenance Services and works under the direction of the Foreperson-Grounds. Performs skilled and semi-skilled manual tasks related to the maintenance, repair and upgrade of district grounds, sports fields and playground equipment. Operates a variety of grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment
** DUTIES:**
1. Operates the backhoe and related attachments. Performs excavation,
trenching, and levelling of a variety of materials. Verifies underground
conditions, systems and equipment prior to digging.
2. May be required to operate other grounds heavy equipment including dump
truck and attachments, tractor trailer, front end loaders, gang mowers and
other equipment to facilitate the function of the grounds and other
departments. Loads/unloads, hauls grounds equipment, materials and supplies
to/from job sites. Operates equipment to spread materials on job sites.
3. Performs routine grounds maintenance tasks including grass cutting, general clean up, sweeping and removing debris and rubbish; snow removal and salting; lines fields, etc.
4. Performs routine daily maintenance and repair of the backhoe.
5. Ensures tools, equipment and work areas are clean and safe.
6. May direct the work of others assigned to assist in the work being performed.
7. Loads and unloads vehicles; transports materials and equipment as needed. When required cleans, checks and confirms operational safety of vehicle.
8. Remains current with changing technology, practices, and equipment.
9. Applies safe work practices at all times. Reports unsafe conditions.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Secondary school completion, plus the appropriate certification to operate assigned equipment (i.e. back hoe course).
2. Minimum of 4 years recent experience in the operation of a backhoe. Recent related grounds experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.
3. Valid B.C. driver's license. Safe driving record. Valid Class 3 driver’s license.
4. Good mechanical ability and ability to operate and maintain appropriate
tools and equipment.
5. Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
6. Ability to work in all weather conditions.
7. Current and thorough knowledge of related standards, practices, regulations, codes and methods. Ability to read blueprints and specifications.
8. Good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Ability to use judgement and tact when providing information.
9. Ability to work independently and to set priorities. Ability to work as a member of a crew.
10. Knowledge of WCB and WHMIS regulations. Safe work practices.
