About the role

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Chair, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and working under the supervision of the Supervisor of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Laboratories, the incumbent provides technical system and computer support for instructional, research, and administrative activities of the Department. In addition, the incumbent ensures the continuous availability of the instrumentation, computer and data acquisition systems within the Department, testing systems implementation. The incumbent repairs, modifies, and maintains civil and environmental engineering instrumentation equipment, apparatus, and interfacing computer-based data acquisition systems, and acts as consultant to any computer user within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and its laboratories, by providing user training, post implementation evaluation, and laboratories. The Networks and System Administrator specifies, implements, and maintains the department’s internal computer network including hardware and services; specifies, implements and maintains all aspects of the Department’s Microsoft server/client system supporting undergraduate and graduate academic and research requirements. The incumbent has specific responsibilities for software and hardware procurement, installation, configuration, administration, diagnosis, and maintenance; instructional laboratory operations administration; and instructional IT support.

As an integral part of the collaborative IT team within the Faculty of Engineering and Design the incumbent is also responsible for providing escalated and secondary frontline computer support to faculty, staff, researchers, students and shared operational administration of computing facilities in the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Must have knowledge of theories, principles, and applications with respect to computer hardware, operating systems, software, networking, data acquisition requirements and modern instrumentation techniques and equipment utilized in Civil Engineering.
  • This requires skills in planning and organizing of engineering and technical activities, in problem solving, communications, and decision-making as it affects computer resources. Must be skilled in operation, maintenance, and servicing of the departmental computer equipment and systems and related data acquisition systems; collection and analysis of data, in writing of operating and service instructions and technical reports.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Graduation from a three-year engineering technologist program from a recognized technical college in the field of electronic/computer engineering/information technology/network technology. Must be eligible to be a member of the Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Five years of experience in the area of both hardware and software related to computer networks and systems, computerized data acquisition systems, and modern instrumentation techniques. An understanding of the general aspects of a Civil Engineering Laboratory would be considered an asset. Equivalencies in education and experience will be considered.
