Library Technician, Technical & Circulation Services

Reporting to Director, Library the Library Technician, Technical and Circulation Services (“Technician”) is a hybrid role, providing both technical and circulation services. The Technician supports the organization and accessibility of library collections through cataloguing, processing, and metadata creation. Furthermore, the incumbent ensures materials are accurately described, labeled, and maintained to meet institutional standards. Working collaboratively with library staff and instructors, the Technician assists with course reserves, collection maintenance, assists with interlibrary loans, and special projects. In addition, the incumbent provides frontline circulation and basic research assistance to students, instructors, and staff, as well as promoting library resources.
Responsibilities:
Technical Services:

Catalogues library items (original and copy cataloguing) according to OCLC’s cataloguing documentation.

Produces spine, contents, and location labels; stamps items and applies labels; applies cover treatments to circulating items.
-
Communicates with instructors about course reserves; retrieves, catalogues, processes, and removes reserves items.
-
Assesses damaged items in consultation with liaison librarians for binding, replacement or discard.
-
Chooses bindery service provider and arranges for binding of damaged items.
-
Discards library items identified by librarians.
-
Provides project support as needed, such as, checking holdings, selection of new items (under direction of liaison librarians), database link support, and collection maintenance.

As part of the Communication Team, promotes library services and collections through campus posters, book displays and other related tasks as assigned.

Participates in the work of library consortium teams related to technical services.
-
Shelving, shelf reading, and other collection maintenance as needed.
Library Services:
-
Circulates, renews and places holds on library items at the Service Desk.

Creates user accounts and issues library cards.
-
Refers fines and lost book charge appeals to the Borrow Services Coordinator.
-
Explains library policies to borrowers.
-
Answers basic research and directional questions in person, by phone and on chat; refers complex questions to Information Services staff.

Opens or closes the library building on an “as-needed” basis.

Reviews WorldShare holds reports and processes pull lists and bins as needed.

Assists Borrower Services Coordinator with processing Interlibrary Loan requests from CUE users and other libraries.

Opens and closes the library on an as-needed basis.
Communication, Content Creation, Events, and Other Tasks:

Organizes exhibits in the library.
-
Creates physical and online book displays for the library and other campus departments.
-
Liaises with organizers of events held in the library.
-
Coordinates or assists in events and activities organized by the Library or by other departments in the institution (i.e. President’s Office, Office of Research and Innovation, etc.).

Seek learning opportunities, mentorship, and professional development that enhances their efficacy in the role.

Other duties, relevant to the position, shall be assigned as required.
Requirements:

Library and Information Technology Diploma is required.
-
Undergraduate Degree is preferred.
-
A minimum of 2 years relevant experience is required.
-
Ability to pass a clear criminal record check is required.
