Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the Clinical Scholar is an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) who will service in a dedicated mentorship role, supporting the clinical development of:

  • Newly graduated nurses
  • Internationally Educated Nurses
  • Nurses transitioning into new roles or units

This role is focused on the mentorship, coaching, and professional development of new and transitioning nurses. This role is ideal for a nurse with strong frontline hospital experience who is passionate about supporting the growth of fellow nurses, whether they are entering the profession or looking to advance their clinical knowledge and skills. The position involves direct, on-unit engagement, providing real-time mentoring and coaching to nursing staff. This role plays a key role in strengthening care delivery, advancing best practices, and championing a culture of patient safety and continuous improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Practice in accordance with the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the various organizational standards and policies.
  • Provide unit-based mentorship and at-the-elbow support to newly hired or transitioning nurses.
  • Champion evidence-based practices and patient safety initiatives within the clinical setting.
  • Facilitate both formal and informal learning opportunities, such as on-unit huddles, one-on-one coaching sessions, bedside teaching and reflective practice.
  • Collaborate with unit leadership, Professional Practice, and Clinical Nurse Educators to identify gaps in knowledge or practice, support orientation, and onboarding processes, monitor progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Promote a culture of clinical excellence, continuous learning, and collaboration.
  • Track and support skill progression through observation, documentation, and feedback.
  • Contribute to program evaluation activities, such as pre- and post-program surveys and monthly reporting.
  • Maintain a consistence presence on the unit(s), adjusting schedule as needed to support nurses across various shifts.
  • Actively contribute to a respectful work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment and Discrimination-Free Workplace Policy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required. CPMHN(C) certification would be an asset.

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in good standing.

  • Current CPR certificate.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent frontline hospital clinical experience, ideally in mental health and addictions.

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, change management, and problem-solving skills

  • Proven ability to provide clinical mentorship and training, including:

  • Experience as a preceptor, mentor or clinical instructor

  • Strong knowledge of CNO Standards, hospital protocols, and integration of best practices

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking and decision-making skills.

  • Proven ability to work effectively with all members of the health care team.

  • Expert level of clinical proficiency with Meditech functionality

  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing.

  • Bilingual (French/English) level A- is considered an asset.

Salary Range:

43.34 to 61.96 per hour
