About the role
Job Purpose
The Hydro Mechanical Engineering Graduate supports the execution of hydroelectric projects with a primary focus on site-based activities at the R.H. Saunders Generating Station in Cornwall, Ontario.
This role is designed to provide hands-on field experience in hydromechanical systems, including generator and turbine components and all auxiliary power house systems. The position supports project execution, inspections, and coordination activities, while also assisting with site-level administrative and documentation requirements.
Reporting to the RH Saunders Site Manager, the role bridges engineering support with field operations and site coordination.
Duties and Responsibilities
Site-Based Engineering Support (Primary Focus)
- Support on-site execution of generator and turbine overhaul projects
- Assist with inspections, measurements, and condition assessments of hydromechanical equipment
- Participate in field troubleshooting and resolution of mechanical issues
- Assist with dimensional inspections using tools such as Romer Arm or Laser Tracker (or review collected data)
- Monitor site activities to ensure alignment with engineering drawings, specifications, and scope
Field Coordination & Project Support
- Coordinate with site supervisors, trades, contractors, and suppliers
- Assist in tracking project progress, milestones, and daily site activities
- Participate in site meetings and communicate updates to engineering and operations teams
- Support coordination between field operations and engineering design teams
Site Administration & Documentation
- Maintain organized, accurate, and audit-ready site documentation
- Assist with daily reports, field logs, inspection records, and progress tracking
- Support document control, including drawings, revisions, and technical records
- Assist with compiling QA/QC documentation and turnover packages
- Support administrative coordination related to subcontractors and site compliance documentation
Engineering & Technical Support
- Assist with design updates and drawing revisions based on field findings
- Support preparation of engineering documentation and reports
- Participate in peer drawing reviews
- Apply foundational GD&T principles in design and field interpretation
Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Support Quality Assurance / Quality Control processes on site
- Ensure compliance with Hydro Tech standards, client requirements, and applicable codes
- Adhere to all Health & Safety policies and participate in hazard assessments and toolbox talks
- Identify and report hazards, deficiencies, and non-conformances
Learning & Development
- Work closely with senior engineers, project managers, and field leadership
- Gain hands-on experience in hydroelectric systems and site execution practices
- Progressively take on increased responsibility in field coordination and technical problem-solving

Qualifications & Requirements
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or AScT (Applied Science Technologist)
- Coursework or academic exposure in fluid mechanics, hydraulics, thermodynamics, or mechanical systems preferred
Experience
- 0–2 years of relevant experience (co-op or internship in construction, industrial, or field environments preferred)
- Exposure to construction, industrial, manufacturing, or hydroelectric environments strongly preferred
- Experience working in field-based or site-driven environments considered an asset
- Demonstrated involvement in hands-on engineering projects (academic or professional)
Technical Skills
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, or similar design software
- Basic understanding of hydromechanical systems and rotating equipment
- Exposure to GD&T principles considered an asset
- Strong computer skills, particularly in documentation and reporting
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), particularly for documentation and reporting
- Ability to collect, organize, and interpret field data and measurements
- Familiarity with inspection tools or measurement equipment (e.g., laser measurement systems) considered an asset
Professional Requirements
- Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Professional Engineers Ontario or AScT
- Valid Class G driver’s license
- Ability to work primarily on-site in an industrial environment
- Willingness and ability to travel as required
Working Conditions
- Primarily site-based at a hydroelectric generating station
- Exposure to construction, industrial, and hydroelectric plant environments
- Physical presence on-site required for extended periods
- Overtime may be required based on project demands
