Description
The Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for assessment and treatment of inpatient and outpatient communication disorders (i.e., speech, language, hearing) and swallowing impairment (dysphagia) inclusive of, but not limited to, clinical and instrumental assessment techniques such as video fluoroscopic assessment, and instrumental voice assessment utilizing perceptual and objective measures (e.g., VHI, CAPE V, CVE – 2, Visi-Pitch).
Advocates for patients and families regarding issues specific to communication and dysphagia, and provides education and best practice guidance to patients, family members, partners in care and hospital staff. Contributes to local, regional, and national knowledge by participating in, and contributing to evidence informed practice. Acts as a clerical educator for high school co-op, volunteer, and health professional students.

Qualifications

Must be a member in good standing with CASLPO
-
Must be a graduate of a certified and accredited University, with a Masters in S-LP
-
Previous experience in hospital environment preferred
-
Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work as team
-
Demonstrated ability in tactful, empathetic, and caring approach to patient care
-
Current certification in BCLS and demonstrated ongoing competence through annual re-certification
-
Demonstrated knowledge of computers and Windows-based software programs
-
Familiarity with and ability to maintain S-LP equipment and supplies
-
Demonstrated clinical problem-solving skills and sound judgement
-
Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to prioritize
-
Ability to effectively perform S-LP assessments and analyses
-
Physically capable of frequent standing, walking, bending, stretching, lifting and of assisting heavy-needs patients as required

Demonstrated reliable attendance record

About Lake of the Woods District Hospital
The Lake of the Woods District Hospital was founded in 1897, and was originally known as the Rat Portage Jubilee Hospital and then the Kenora General Hospital. Through the years a series of additions and renovations took place to meet the expanding needs of the population. On May 1, 1968, the St. Joseph's Hospital and the Kenora General Hospital amalgamated to form the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Treating well over 30,000 people per year, Lake of the Woods District Hospital is Northwestern Ontario's largest hospital outside of Thunder Bay.
The Hospital's core programs include emergency and ambulatory care, chronic care, mental health, maternal and child health, and acute care services which include general medicine, intensive care and surgical services.
