The Senior Labour Relations Advisor is an expert in understanding and administering collective agreements and will provide advice and guidance to Human Resources and Operations teams with proper interpretation and application of such. They will be responsible for all labour relations matters, including participating in the collective bargaining process, grievance resolution and communication with union representatives. This position plays an integral role in fostering a collaborative relationship with the union, its representatives, and its membership. The Senior Labour Relations Advisor must be able to work independently using sound judgement and discretion while providing timely and accurate advice on labour relations matters that impact the operations. They will be strong problem solvers, solution providers, and have the ability to analyze from a micro and high-level lens.
This role will report to the Director, Labour Relations.
Key Accountabilities:
- Ensure that a constructive, collaborative, and transparent labour relations environment is maintained at assigned unionized locations.
- Provide guidance to the Human Resources team members and managers with respect to proactively addressing potential labour relations issues and resolving grievances in a timely manner.
- Actively foster productive relations between the Company, the Union and team members.
- Advise sites as required to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
- Play a key role in preparing for the collective bargaining process, including developing the collective bargaining strategy, assisting the business to formalize the mandate, researching recently negotiated agreements and current labour relations trends, including drafting of bargaining agenda, proposed language, tentative and memorandum of agreements
- Collect, analyze, and interpret information such as case law, relevant precedence, and arbitral jurisprudence to assist the Company in addressing differences in interpreting collective agreements or other documents of record.
- Prepare for, and where required represent, the Company (with the assistance of legal) at arbitrations and mediations.
- Assist the labour relations team to create and deliver labour relations training, including site education on collective agreement changes.
- Assist HR where required to draft communications, including grievance resolutions, settlements and memorandums.
- Provide guidance and consultation around managing change that impacts unionized team members.
- Manage and continue to enhance database that houses all Labour Relations matters and assist sites in its usage
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of labour relations or relevant management experience.
- Degree and/or diploma in Labour Relations or Industrial Relations from a recognized post-secondary institution, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
- Strong understanding of labour relations practices, effective relationship management with the union and the collective bargaining process.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable employment related and labour legislation, including leading labour laws and human rights decisions.
- Experience conducting disciplinary investigations and resolving grievances.
- Computer literacy in all applications of MS Office; HRIS experience an asset.
- Process development experience
- Able to successfully obtain a criminal record check through the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB)
