About the role
ACCOUNTING MANAGER
We are seeking a hands-on, people-focused Accounting Manager to lead our operational accounting functions for a dynamic wholesale distribution company in Western Canada. This role will oversee a large accounting team of 19+ staff with 5 direct reports and will combine strong team leadership with practical, hands-on accounting work. The Accounting Manager reports directly to the CFO and works closely with the Controller to ensure accuracy, efficiency, compliance, and timely financial processing across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable/Credit, and Payroll. The company is implementing Prophet 21 as its new ERP system this year.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Leadership & Development · Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of 19+ staff through coaching, performance feedback, training, and career development planning. · Foster a positive team culture with strong interpersonal skills and a practical, hands-on leadership style. · Manage workflow, recruitment, workload balancing, and cross-training to meet deadlines.

Operational Accounting Oversight · Oversee full-cycle transactional accounting including invoice processing, vendor payments, collections, payroll execution, and reconciliations. · Approve payments, review coding accuracy, and perform final payroll reviews while acting as primary backup initially. · Take direct ownership of bank reconciliations, overseeing the Staff Accountant. · Ensure compliance with internal policies, ASPE, and regulatory requirements.

Analytical & Technical Accounting Support · Support commissions calculations/reporting, KPI tracking, variance analysis, reconciliations, and initial budget compilation with branch/sales managers. · Provide hands-on month-end close support and ad-hoc analysis.

Process Improvement & Controls · Drive process improvements and automation with the upcoming Prophet 21 implementation. · Monitor internal controls, identify risks, and implement corrective actions.

Reporting & Collaboration · Prepare performance reports and provide insights to the CFO and Controller. · Collaborate on month-end deliverables, audit readiness, and cross-departmental alignment.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships and create an inclusive team environment ·
- Genuine commitment to staff development and mentoring ·
- Practical, hands-on leadership style with strong ownership ·
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy under pressure ·
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills ·
- Proficiency in Prophet 21 or similar ERP systems, UKG or similar payroll/HRMS systems, and advanced Microsoft Excel ·
- Excellent time management and communication skills
EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required · CPA designation (or actively pursuing) strongly preferred ·
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience ·
- At least 4–5 years in a supervisory role overseeing transactional and administrative teams (AP, AR/Credit, Payroll, bank reconciliations, and accounts receivable posting) ·
- Experience in a mid-sized wholesale or distribution company is an asset ·
- Knowledge of ASPE (Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises), tax regulations, and Alberta compliance requirements
