The Opportunity

This is an exciting time for an enthusiastic and skilled Theatre Technician to join Branksome Hall as we prepare to open our new Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST).  Reporting to the Instructional Leader, Integrated Arts, the Theatre Technician will work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders across the school providing technical production support for theatrical, musical and other productions. Highly collaborative and experienced in theatrical production, the successful candidate also supports other school events and programming in the classroom as required.  The Theatre Technician performs skilled technical work in the operation of a wide range of theatrical equipment in a modern theatre. Technical work involves the operation of lighting, sound and staging related duties, as well as training teachers and students in the use of the theatre equipment. 

Alongside faculty and students, they will design, build, and maintain costumes, props, and set pieces while occasionally collaborating with external artists. Adaptable and proactive, the Theatre Technician, will also assist in training teachers and students in the use of the theatre equipment.

As a member of the Arts team, this is a full-time, year round position.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to

  • Collaborate with various faculty members to support planning and execution of school events and Theatre performances.

  • Support event set up, space and resources bookings, and ensure the safe technical operations of the theatre venues.

  • Train faculty and students on proper equipment use for anything technical related within the theatre.

  • Provide assistance with related equipment and research new materials to support the growth of curricular and co-curricular programs.

  • Oversee equipment and material rentals, and maintain inventories or materials, including any repair or replacement needs.

  • Collaborate with faculty and students to build and maintain costume, props, and small set pieces as well as work with outside artists to build costumes, props, sets for shows.

  • Troubleshoot theatre equipment and computer problems.

  • Assist in developing guidance for use documents for iCAST and other Arts facilities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary training or equivalent in lighting, stage management, sound engineering, or other related field;

  • Coursework or training in professional theatre operations, performing arts, or a related field is considered an asset;

  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ related experience;

  • Knowledge of operational and technical techniques used in theatre production lighting, sound, and rigging equipment;

  • Understanding and expertise of various computer software and hardware systems related to theatre production;

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques in maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment used in stage productions (this does not extend to maintenance and repair where a licensed electrician is required.);

  • Experience in working with sound engineering, video mapping, and digital lighting desks is an asset; 

  • Experience with theatre stage rigging involving scenic design and construction is an asset.

Target Hiring Salary: $66,238 - $82,798 per annum
